Ahhh, the first time... Late '75, picked up a '74 4001MG, barely used, for $225. Even had the exploding Grovers, which really bummed me out, being just 17, and dumb as a rock. Nobody in town knew how to fix it either. The good old days!

First: October 1991. It was a midnight blue 620/6 with black hardware. I wish I still had it!
Most recent: November 2005. 2005 Jetglo 330/6. I recently sold this one back in June for more than I paid for it new. It was a nice guitar, but I just wasn't crazy about it.
Favorite: May 2000. 1998 Fireglo 360/6. It has been the best guitar I have ever owned. This guitar never fails to please me every time I pick it up. My baby for sure.

In 1982, I bought a 1979 4001 JG. Only three years old, it already had a nice big buckle-rash patch on the back, and badly needed a refret. Within a few months, I had the guys at The 12th Fret in Portland, OR put new jumbo-size frets on. They did an awesome job - keeping the original fretboard finish. Almost exactly 20 years later, the same guy who did the fret job repositioned the bridge on that same bass.
It was my main player - gigs, recordings, rehearsal, for a good 15 years. I had all the hardware chrome plated, and put in the V63 reissue pickups & moved the toaster PU to the pre-'74 neck spacing. It's still in heavy-rotation, but now is tuned B-E-A-D and has extensive wiring mods - pickups phase in/out, series/parallel, and low-cut cap in/out.
