Dane's 4004V63S is actually a really nice looking and great sounding bass. It was just back from being "created" when we were at the SoCal 2007 funfest.

Dane, can you tell a bit more about the 4004V63?
How does it sound, with what kind of strings? Are the electronics 4001-style? What kOhms for the pots? why toasters? Where did you get the pick guard from? How did you modify it and the cavity?
Please send some more detail pics, also with removed pick guard. Do you have a patent pending on this mod?

Peter, I'm using D'Addario EXP 170 rounds on it and while the electronics are from a 4003 Schematic, because of the extra thickness of the top and guard, I had to use Les Paul spec parts. The pots are all CTS 500K, the switch is a Switchcraft and the caps are Orange Drop .047's. The specific location of the controls was neccecitated by the existing controls as I did not want to do any routing on the front or drill any extra holes besides the lower pair. All electronics are mounted from rear in an expanded cavity covered by a white acrylic panel. The bass is wired for stereo only. The layout differs from a 4003 in that the switch in the upper position is for the bridge pickup with the controls being volume in front and tone in the rear. Down is for the neck pickup with volume in front and tone in the rear. The pickups are unbuttoned high gains that sound powerful, bright and crisp with the 500K tone pots. The rear pickup routing was filled with maple and then a standard RIC bridge position route was done 3/4" forward. The bridge surround was cut from a late 50's RIC lapsteel piece. I copied the shape of the guard from the one I made for Mark Walker's RM1999. I wasn't even sure I was going to put a guard on the bass, but one of the truss rod nuts was loose in the cavity at the rear of the fingerboard. Out came the Dremmel to add access routes to both rods making a guard or a refin a neccecity. I've since added a vintage RIC Delrin nut too. The sound is not like my other 4004's and I don't have a 4003 to compare too. No patent is pending.

REALLY NICE job there Dane, your creations are fantastic!

The ONLY thing I'd change (if it were mine to do so) is slap a HS on that bad boy!
