Whoops! Sorry, John, didn't see you wanted to add this to your tally. That's what happens when you post and conference call at the same time, folks. I'm a walking PSA.

Well Charly, it seems to me that all these feelings you're having are self-imposed. Judging by the responses this thread has received and your comments, it certainly doesn't seem to me like anyone gives a **** about the number of Ricks someone has or doesn't have except for you. I have more Rickenbackers than many people, and there are many people that have more than I do. I don't think that makes me any better or worse than anyone else. I sure as hell don't consider myself royalty and wouldn't want anyone to think of me that way either.

If you didn't like the way things went this year and still want to attend an event in the future, be more active in it's planning.

I'm sorry you didn't seem to care for the "pro" bands Hautewerk, Great Big Things, and Bridgework. I enjoyed the other bands and had a good time playing three songs with my band for you guys. I thought having actual bands play was a nice idea - at least there were some actual drummers in attendance. Unfortunately, it didn't seem like any of them wanted to jam, then again maybe none of them were asked to. I know the drummer of my band was not approached. Don't forget that the Confluence started at 10 am Saturday. There was plenty of time for open jamming between 10 am and 7 or 8 pm when the 1st band went on. Some problems with a jam are that not everyone knows how to play the same songs, some people don't have a good enough ear to follow along, and some people are just too shy to play in front of others. Nothing wrong with any of that. I for one, would sit out of a jam session because I don't know how to play any songs by the Beatles, Byrds, or other groups that I heard played throughout the day. I could certainly learn them if I knew what songs someone else could play in advance.

Maybe you could be the organizer of next year's jam. Gather a list of songs that some of us know how to play so other can learn them, print out some lead sheets so those of us not too familiar with a song can follow along a little easier, and so on. We can still keep things loose for wide open jamming and have plenty of fun that way too. If you were looking for some technical advice, maybe you could have asked more. I would have helped you with the wiring of your bass had you asked me. There's something else you could help with the planning of - sessions on repair and maintenance. Just a thought.

Oh yeah, Happy Anniversary Marc!

Eric, I think that's sensible advice. A good job of organizing would give all levels and interests a chance to play some of those great instruments with some peers. Could we rock out all day long if we want? :P I think Paul A. put some different flavor set lists together this last time, dunno if they were followed, but in addition we could have used some charts, lyrics, etc. printed out in enough copies for those who would have liked to bone up beforehand. But don't lose the pro attractions either! I only saw Kenny's set but it was great! Sorry I missed yours.
There's something sub-strata going on with the conflict Charly and others had and I don't think it illustrates how things have gone in general; I think it's an exception to the rule. I'd like to propose that it's time to put the royalty metaphor out of circulation.

Wow, this thread took a turn!

I thought it was cool to see YOU there Charly; just as I thought it was cool to see everyone else I met last year. I didn't base my happiness to see any of the folks at the confluence based on which or how many Ricks they brought.

I probably resemble the "Rickenoyalty" remark to a miniscule extent; I did bring five Rickenbackers...and a Vox teardrop 12. I brought my them all because they're all somewhat different, with unsual finishes, and people like to see them, play them, and because plenty of questions and interest in those models/finishes has been mentioned about them over the course of the past year, both on this forum and the RIC forum. I didn't bring them to show them off, or to make myself seem great-I didn't build them, and in any case I'd be a fool if I were to think of myself as some sort of "Rickenroyalty" because of the Ricks I own; other folks have far more Rickenbackers, and far more rare Rickenbackers, than I do.

Remember too that for a fair amount of time on Saturday you were working on your Rick bass, soldering in all of the wiring and pots. I wouldn't want to be interrupted if I were engaged in such work, and it's likely that while you were so engaged that folks gave you some space out of respect for letting you get the job done.

Saturday afternooon, I thought we had a great chat about this and that over at sPOOn's. I took a look at your Epiphone and listened to your description of the mods to the guitar as well. Folks are bound to be a bit more interested in Ricks at a Confluence than non-Ricks, but I don't think there was any dislike of the fact that you brought non-Ricks. wes Mitchell brought a relic Custom Shop Strat, Jerry brought an SG to sell for a friend, and I brought a Vox Teardrop 12 with a whammy bar of all things.

With all of the running around I did as a very minor organizer, I didn't get to visit with folks half as much as I wanted to, jam as much as I wanted to, or get to try out a tenth of the instruments that I found interesting. I've been dying to play a new or recent 4003 for two years and have yet to do so. I'm not sure why you didn't feel welcome, but you shouldn't have felt that way; you've been a part of this forum for a lot longer than I have, and one who contributes to it most substantively, so you shouldn't feel squeezed out by any means.

Ditto, Charly, I was the one who butted in while you were fuming (flux) in the corner there, and you still took time to tell me about the cool pguard and custom surround on your bridge pup. Now that's good info because I've got the same model (thanks Gary) and I may wish for the same options... I had no idea you weren't having a good time. But if there's royalty here, you're it, man. Nice meeting you :D

Paul, I thought I saw TWO Vox teardrop 12's of yours... I think if there'd been more stands we would have seen more of the other brands in folks' corrals. People put a lot of thought and are proud of their whole collections, say in Wes' case rightfully so, and don't want to cull out some fine pieces. But space is limited, trunk space too, stands are scarce and it is a Rick convention after all. It's not to say that no one wants to see a non-Rick there.

This whole question makes me smile because I felt the opposite way when one time I showed up to a jam session with my 320 and everyone else had these spandex-hair-band guitars and stupid buzzy little amps  They gave me a hard time for bringing a Rickenbacker   That's what I get for bringing a gun to a knife fight    Locking WHATEVERS? Dude, get a Bigsby!

Yes I can have one made, Paul. I plan to as a matter of fact. I have a '92 V63 that I'm planning to use, but I haven't got around to tinkering with it. Before I go to all the trouble to have it refinished I need to make sure that this is the right one, and I just haven't had the time to set it up and make my minor mods to it to find out if I want to go through with it. Once I do go through with it, I have no doubt that I will like it more than an original one as an original one would be a 2000 model and I prefer the earlier ones.

Marc sorta got his Sea Green V63 as well. He has a '73 that he had refinished in Sea Green.

+1
Charly, you just sat in the corner by your table for most of the confluence.

I certainly enjoyed the 'pro" bands that played. Glad your band did those 3 songs, Erik, thanks. Thanks also to Hautewerk and to Great Big Things.

That makes at least two guys willing to help Charly, as I explained John A's 4003 wiring diagram to Charly as well as my own. I also told Charly if he needed any other help with wiring his 4003, to let me know.

I don't recall any ill feeling towards these instruments being there either.

My last post on the subject

1. I have been on every organizing committee dl except for the first year. Thanks for noticing, I just couldn’t make the live gathering this year due to work and/or conflicts, I forget which one.
2. I am not a jammer, I am part of the audience. It was neat seeing the spontaneous jams happen all over the room in prior years, and the years we had a pa and drums, watching different folks just grab something, plug in, and play along.
3. The mix was not so special either, it was too loud and the vocals were way down in the mix.
4. I need to plan meals due to my diabetes, and having to wait til 4 to go (by request so as to keep the room open) was tough.
5. I was hoping for some direction on my “soldering”. I ended up ruining a pot due to excessive heat as I wired it wrong more than a few times. I was hurrying because I was asked to have my pix taken, and it wasn’t ready for a photo op and folks were busy elswewhere
6. Most everything I have stated in this thread was taken in the worst possible way it could be interpreted.

Maybe I could have my MG 360 WB refinished at the same time so they'd match perfectly. :D MG is so...natural looking.
