Yeah, it really helps to be able to actually "see" the ideas that you knock around in your head.

I'd be glad to help out. I figure, since you provide us with a such great place to exchange ideas on all things Rickenbacker, throwing together a couple of finishes for you would be a way to give a little something back. And like I said, it's not a lot of work at all.

Exploring bursts toward the maroon side I have found a couple.

It is so interesting that the addition of yellow in the second gives a very different appearance to the maroon tone.

If you're going with a Mary Kaye type finish, I think Gold hardware and guards would look better than black. I'm not a fan of gold hardware as a practical matter, but it does look nice on my MK Strat.

Some of the burst of sunburst finishes suggested seem to my eye to be more traditional than custom colour-very subtle and staid to my eye. Then again, I tend to favor bold color finishes anyway, though I wouldn't mind a tabbyburst.

Paul: I agree that the bursts here tend to lean moreso toward the traditional. I am open for examples of more customized burst should you have any in mind.

Another finish to consider is a red-brown or black burst like the mid-'60s version of Autumnglo. Paul W.'s gorgeous '60 Capri has a multi-layered burst that looks similar.

Fair enough: You're right, it does look better. Actually, I should have called the previous one "white blonde", since "Mary Kay" does actually imply the combination of white blonde with gold hardware.

I think Peter's gonna have a tough decision. So many good looking possibilities.

Or, here's a different approach: a nice transparent emerald green.



It's a striking color, not one you'll see on other Ricks, or even anything like it, it lets the wood grain show through, and it would look good with both the chrome hardware and the gold pickguard/TRC.

One way to emphasize a color's character is to put it next to an "opposite" or complimentary color. This is because of "ghost imaging" in the sensors inside of your eye. Sorry I don't know the technical words. Try this experiment, or maybe you know it: Stare at a patch of bright red for 30 seconds without looking away. Then close your eyes and what will you see? A green patch which is the ghost image of the red. When complimentary colors border each other that principle works to intensify your perception of each as your eye moves from one area to another in an eyes-open mini version of the experiment, all day long.

In short, if you want to emphasize green, put it next to red, and vice versa. Works for purple/yellow, blue/orange, all the complimentaries.

The one FG burst type finish I find really striking are the early 60s bursts, which seem, at least to my eye, to be of a bold, mostly red and orange color-would that fall into the complementary category? There's something about those particular finishes, especially with gold guards, that is quite striking. Most of the other FG type finishes I've seen appear quite tame and staid to my eye by comparison. My mind just thinks, "Eh, next", whenever I see some of the more modern FG finishes, while thinking "OOH-lovely!" to the early 60s variety.

Nice Icicle glo effect PW! Next thing you know, folks are going to be requesting that you sink "icicles"/tinsel into the clear coats of some of your refinishes.

I like that trans emerald green Chuck King! I wonder why I like green so much; I have some partial colorblindness-I see them well enough, but my brain gets confused with some shades of brown blue or green- I have to look twice, but there are lots of green shades that I just fall in love with.

That Capri with the Kauffman and tortiose/gold PG is one of the most sublimely beautiful guitars ever made, IMO.
