I think it's genuine Rick 4000 because of the Shedua strip in the bass. not a 4001 no routing for the the neck pup.
maybe worth restoring. any s/n on output jack?

Already discussed, and theory shot down (see thread above).

A 4000 has dot inlays, no binding, a contoured body and from this time period would have a set neck.

It has body and neck binding and fretboard inlays, so it cannot be a 4000. Either a messed up 4001 or a messed up faker. I vote faker.

Good point then the pickguard is hiding the neck p/u routing or it;s a fake but it sure looks like the back of my 4001 MG
if it's a fake then a pretty good one but a fake is still a fake. the truss rods are beat but they look like rick truss rod setup.

I still think it's a beat up old 4001

I've seen fakers with dual truss rods, I think I posted pics here.

Two sorts of copies I've seen have dual rods: Japanese Matsumoku, usually branded Aria, Univox etc. They look like this:



Or Italian-made Gherson, which looks like this:



And plainly our subject here ain't either of these. There may have been other dual-rod copies, but judging on what I can see of this, I'm pretty sure it's not Japanese, at least.

Looking at the pics you posted and another one I am attaching, I tend to agree with you, and change my vote to "real but messed up".

Ok, everybody, here's chapter 3 of the suspicious looking bass saga.
My friend lent me the bass for evaluation. Basically, he want to get rid of it anyway because he's not even a musician.
So I brought it to my place and took some pictures that should clarify a few point. I apologize for not having a better camera (I used my phone's).
Anyway, here they are.

1-As you can see, it does have the neck pick up routing:


2-Also, the winding is indeed interrupted under the tailpiece:


3-The fingerboard's color does look darker than it should but, it's likely because the former owner put some kind of oil or wax or whatever product on it that made it look darker. As you can (barely) see in this picture, it's possible to see, due to wear, that it was once much lighter colored, with the right reddish looking brown tone.


4-Here's a closer look at the body:


5-And here's a closer look at the neck pick up routing.


6-An interesting thing I found when I removed the pickguard is what looks like a pencil signature by somene named "Joe", under what reads "4001-P". Under "Joe" it looks like it says "Jim". Does anyone know what it means?


Based on the information I gathered, I suppose it's real.
Let me know what you think.

Do fakers have a wider one piece screw/strapthing like Rick's have?
