I left out one underrated guitar, Alembic very pricey but IMHO as well made a guitar or bass you can buy. John Entwhisle played a custom version for years.. One of the reasons Chris Squire bought his RM1999 Rick, He saw The Who at the Marquee Club. He was a huge fan of JE.

I was at an acoustic jam last year where it seemed, except for two of us, everyone was playing either a Martin or a Taylor. I had the 730S (along with the J-45RW) and this other fellow had a Gallagher G-65. I remember that several who played the Gallagher basically said, "Nice, but ......"

Back on topic...

Underrated:
Fender Jaguar Bass, Fender Jaguar Bass, oh, and the Fender Jaguar Bass... i.e. the Jazz Bass's nerdy cousin who performs better on standardized tests (don't even speculate what I mean by that because I don't know)

Overrated:
I'm getting pretty tired of the Fender J, and I own one... but they are pretty awesome. I think it's just their reputation as "uber-bass", "Let's all make boutique basses out of essentially the same design," that I'm tired of. Although to be honest I'm also just sort of uninspired by mine right now... (ashamed) It's such a lovely bass, I dunno why I'd fall out of love with it. Maybe I'm just lusting for a Jag Bass.

As for Taylor acoustics, ANYONE who saw Travis Meeks in Lawrence, KS a month ago would not be saying anything bad about them right now. I'll post pics if I am forced to defend myself... but they'll do no justice to his sound.

Joshua, nothing bad to say about the geetars themselves.

More like meh...

But I do jones after that T5 12er.

They released a line of solid-bodied electrics at last year's NAMM. Very nice quality, though everytime I took a close look I was pounced upon by a salesman. Weird. But as far as the design went, a double-meh.

To be fair, it's tough to come up with a really great new design these days (not that it was ever very easy!)

You will note extensive edits in this thread. The RRF Forum Rules do not allow the discussion of sexuality, politics and religion. The edits involved the removal of those posts that made reference to religion even though they may also have made comment on guitars.

Regardless of how Taylors make you feel... here's Travis Meeks turning "meh" into "mellifluous"!

Can I add one manufacturer real quick? One of my favorites, Hamer.
I used to play an 80's Hamer Special, nice like a Les Paul double cut and it was sweet.
Also had a Hamer Standard, Explorer type, and loved it too.
Still have a 12 string bass and a recently retired Cruisebass. The Slammer and SATO stuff is ****, but the older stuff to about 95-96 can't be beat.

G&Ls are definitely underrated --- as good if not superior use of components and fit/finish that would make an oinker blush. I'm as happy as a clam at high tide with my ASAT Semi-Hollow and Comanche. Just my dos centavos' worth. Over 'n out.....Goofyfoot.
