Why take a beautiful piece of wood, that was a living, breathing thing and slop a smothering layer of black ooze over it that only show's fingerprints?!?!

It's so, BORING!

Grain, GRAIN, G R A I N is where it's at. It makes your bass stand out. Take five new Jetglo RIc basses and set them side by side. Can you tell the difference? NOPE, all the same. NOW, take a RIC that shows the grain like MG/FG/AG/AFG/Wal/ATG/etc and you see a beautiful grain pattern that is one of a kind. No two alike.

Jetglo=BAH!

IMHO
Hmmmmm....Let's see what would happen if we replaced the word "Jet" in the above passage with the word "Squire:"

I was thinking...trying to envision a 4003 in one of the translucent finishes that they offer on the Cheyennes-
Anybody good at photoshop??Or is that sacrilidge?

I'm guessing Rickenbacker has enough to do that their somewhat limited finish range, as opposed to say, well, others, is good enough, and I agree.

Solid Colors- Thye have their place, and were originally put on to color a relatively non-grained bodywood like Alder or basswood-
Some of the colors- Lake Placid Blue, Candy Apple Red, and of course BLACK (aka JetGlo) look very nice especially with bindings and hardware.
I know that the JG Laredo is a benchmark of sorts, and I had the option of JG, FG, OR MG when I bought mine recently.

Vascillated between the FG and the MG, MG won, I LOVE this bass finish. and I have NEVER seen a more beautiful job done on a natural piece of hardwood. I thought my Natural Sterling was exquisite, and it is, but this.....
A whole other level- In many ways....
Oh Ok, I'll discuss- The Sterling, with it's 3-band MM pre, is a Powerful bass, one of my "go-to's" when I get into a new project and want to determine what type of presence I need in the mix and the sound...
I always can dial in just the right amount of eq I need, even with a ****** backline-supplied amp.
But If I left my basses alone, in a room, I think the Laredo just might send the Sterling back to it's OHSC, whimpering,
having to tell his namesake that he got his arse kicked up by a PASSIVE bass...
This amazes me...a passive bass.

As to color- I'm waiting to be "allowed" to send my $$ to a dealer; if he decides to sell my the FG 03.
I want that bass- If he chokes, and let's me hang...I will seriosuly think about pursuing a MG- When I think about the 2 MG Ric models together, I'm gettin' thrilled!

We'll see- I got until 7 PM PST then I gotta go to work, and you at the R2 Forum will not have to endure my mental
duress over RAS for a while!
I will keep the Forum posted as to my 4003 ownership status (or not) as things develop.
I know you all LIVE for this....

And Jason, don't know what happened w/ my PM, but I'm hunting for a new '08 4003, thanks tho.

Larry...There are plenty of other RIC dealers. You've mentioned that your dealer is a jerk. Then why give him your business? I don't do business with people once they prove themselves to be jerks. They can go out of business and take their rightful place as a Walmart greeter for all I care. This guy should be bending over backward to please you in today's economy. Just my $.02. I'd investigate some of the dealers recommended by others in this forum. They're recommended for a reason. They're honest, good people to do business with. Avoid a certain Rick dealer in my hometown. He has a horrible reputation.

Did somebody say Candy Apple Red?!

BUT it is my ONLY solid painted RIC, AND it is SO MYSTICAL, my finger prints slide right off!

Good point Woody, the vintage Fenders do look kinda cool with those 60's era colors.

SO true; I couldn't agree more.
It's down to this-
I've made (2) calls this AM-
Found a MG- Could NOT be a more pleasant dealer....
FG Dealer is "business-like" yet has not YET sent me the info he requires me to pay him--He wants a wire transfer of funds only; will not do CC- says too many stolen cards.
ANd while i understand Merchan't concerns, My card is good as gold and certainly can be verified with today's banking-
I had no probs whatsoever doing the same with my Laredo.

Ony reason for considering this dealer is cause he HAS a FG I want- There are very few, if any available.
Pricing is unilateral, so that's no issue.

Tough call, especially since the MG 4003 was described by the wonderful Dealer as having magnificent flame both body and 'board, and they had no probs whatsoever with a CC transaction.
Wire Xfer costs $25, btw, tho to me- not the point, the general "tude is.
So- the saga continues, as I have not YET frecieved info.
And right-on about today's economy, except that I guess Ric Basses in FG have exempt status!

Well, it wasn't what I voted, but GOOD CHOICE!

Fireglo is pretty high on my list since you can still see the grain and character of the wood...

Man, a new 4004L AND a new 4003. The new FG is sick. And 4003s are better than ever at this time. Enjoy...
