So here's my input to this. A vintaged '77 4001 that only needs to have paint reapplied (if I can stop playing it). It will be white with the black trim, Hipshot hardware, and reissue guard.

A very battered 4001BT, tended to by Paul W.
Sergio Silva custom wound toaster, a Lollar horseshoe, FG finish and checkerboard binding.
Not shown, a nice correct TRC courtesy of Mark Walker.

Next up. A shell of a '75 4001MG. This is all I started with.
Another bit of magic worked by Paul W.
Jetglo finish, Checkerboard binding, half inch toaster, and stock single pole bridge pickup. A very 70's thuddy RIC sound indeed.

Last one.
'84 4000 AZ
Soon to become a 4001S. Half inch toaster and RIC reissue horseshoe. All the parts to restore back to the original are kept.

Man there is some kick a$$ stuff out there!
My first mod – way back around ’75 – I saw a picture somewhere with dark headstock wings – So I painted mine (still like ‘em that way):
Second mod – my 4003s5 – made it Ric-O-Sound as well as std. (sorry no good shots of it)
Then there was Mod 3 – the doubling of string count… 4004L to 4004L8

Great collection of Mods Gareth... and I'd always thought you were a punk!
Tom's 4004L8 is IMHO, one of the seven wonders of the Mod Rickenbacker world!

I can't take any credit for this one, bought it this way from Forumite Sean Kelly. This was a Fireglo V63, but Sean had sent it to Dale Fortune for a redo. He painted it non-yellowing white, stained the fretboard an ebony color, finished the headwings the same way, installed an older (possibly one of those "real vintage") horseshoe pickup, shaved the neck, and replaced the position markers with a whiter material. Maybe I should dig out the horsie and sell it for $1250?
