To me, a 4001/4003 sounds real close to a Jazz bass. Maybe its all in how we each set up our instruments?
And our amps.

+1 on the amps. I have 4 different amps, and they all sound a little different regardless of how they are set, even with the same bass.
As for the 4003/4001 sounding similar to a jazz? I guess I can't agree. My Jazz was (sold it) a completely different animal compared to my Ric. While the Jazz was a descent bass, it had no real growl to it. My Thunderbird however, does have characteristics similar to my Ric.
