well, ... not functionally, but it's got a ton of paint chips, mars, and nicks,
from years of playing punk gigs getting knocked around and getting beer splattered

the only customness is the clear pick guard i made for it,
and a set of a custom kim stone signature strings, he gave me. when they're done, rotosounds will go back on.

Wow, I'd have thought a clear PG would look awful.... but that looks great!!!

Actually my favorite part is how you can see the JG finish all the way across!! So awesome, makes it 4004-ish.

not sure what you mean by, "all the way across"

do you mean not interrupted by a contrasting pick guard? or that the voids for the electronics are painted inside?

i know for a fact, there were routers in 1976.

I, too, really dig that clear pickguard.

Yep. You can see the finish beneath the guard so it's uninterrupted. Very nice.

I always found that interesting too. Knowing Rickenbacker, I'm sure there's some logical explanation.

And, knowing Rickenbacker, it's unlikely we'll hear what it was...

I think it's got something to do with the pin router tooling, the way the tool bit goes through its channel, or possibly the need to change bits to cut this one relief. Drill presses and Forstners are cheap and reliable.

Rick used plywood and Masonite tooling for the pin routing for years, which goes a long way towards explaining the variations in routing on guitars and basses over a period of time as the tooling wore out.

Moving most of this to CNC in the mid-'90s tightened things up a lot.
