I've had the Rockpalast concert/dvd for several years now, and watched it several times. I've talked myself into another viewing this weekend. Mr. Buck plays several guitars in it, not just a 12-string, and it is great to see just the four of them jamming through their youth, no extra musicians! Good stuff! Oh that REM, my favorite band of all time, and the Reconstruction of the Fables tour, greatness! Reconstruction is my favorite REM album, no, wait, it's Reckoning, no, wait, Reconstruction, no, Reckoning, no, Re, no, Re, no, Re, no, Re...

Joe,

"Fables" is my favorite R.E.M. album, too. I must have listened to it hundreds of times over the years. The songwriting is superb and there's an ineffable beauty to the chime and shimmer of that Rickenbacker 12-string. Quintessential folk-rock. As one reviewer put it, the album is "simultaneously up to date and as old as the hills."

Should be! Joe Boyd produced it. I think Richard Thompson played a few gigs with them for that tour.

What year is Buck's 360? I thought I read it was 1980 but I've been unable to retrace my internet steps...

Thanks all!

Just been watching it on YT. It is quite excellent. BTW, anyone know what form of modded Ric Mike Mills is playing? I see a P-Bass pickup, no pickguard and 3 control knobs. Very curious...

Remember: He bought it used in '81 or '82 - right after his Tele was stolen. But, it has Sharkfin inlays, which I believe John Hall pointed out as an eighties thing - So it is between '80 and '82.

Guy,

I knew that Joe Boyd produced the record, but I didn't know that Richard Thompson played at any of their shows on the "Fables" tour. Mitch Easter is a member here and has been kind enough to answer all kinds of questions about producing the first two albums. I only wish Joe Boyd were here on the RRF, too.

Me too, because then I could harass him about RT, Fairport, and Nick Drake! Richard Thompson had a Ric, incidentally, which he lost in his divorce. It once belonged to McGuinn.

And of course Bill Berry also owns one of McGuinn's old Rics; It makes you wonder how many fricking models Roger has gone through!

That's a playback performance with live vocals though, so presumably they were for some odd reason provided with instruments to borrow.

Seems so, or "playing" might be the correct word... :)
