Got a great closeup of Chris Brubeck on his fretless Rick for the book. Check out "New Stew (Opus Two)" by Triple Play. Lots of fun!

The first two albums by Foreigner are essential listening for non clank 4001 tone. Ed Gaglliardi played bass with a 4001LH on those first two albums.

I always wanna hear a Ric! But too often mis-informed people just aren't playing on one of them.

The Clash's first recordings have some obvious Ric bass tones. I'm not sure if Simonon plays all of the bass on those recordings or if perhaps Mick Jones was doing some overdubs. In any case, the sounds seem mostly front pick up to me.

What I like about this thread is the wide range of musical styles you can hear played on Rickenbackers. Apparently we can hear lots of Ric bass tones on early Rick Nelson recordings. I just played the Return to Forever vid with Stanley Clarke on a 4000 for a music history class. Talk about one end of the musical spectrum to the other!

As well as Sir Paul and Pete Quaife, the other magic tone that got me lusting after Rick basses was Bernie Calvert with The Hollies. Check out "He Ain't Heavy", "I'm Sorry, Suzanne", "Jennifer Eccles" and any number of other Hollies hits – no mistaking it when Bernie was wielding his Rick! (a 4000, I believe)

The second bassist for Montrose, Alan Fitzgerald uses the Ric on Paper Money, and Warner Bros. I wore the grooves out of Paper Money. WB took some getting used to, but the bass performances are quite good. He went on to play keyboards for gulp, night Ranger as "Fitz". He also played bass on Gamma 1 with Montrose and Davey Pattison, but I'm unsure if that was still the Ric.
