Same here, I only change strings when all the planets line up.

TI Flats (Jazz flats?) on my'92 4003S (fireglo)

D'Adarrio Chrome Flats on the 3001 and Good old faithful GHS BAss boomers on the 3000 and 4001. And that way keep Michigan economy going

I have a set of Rotosound stainless steel I can put on my V63.... Just wondering if they still chew up the frets as they used to in the past? I had some installed a few years back and really thought that was the case then. Let me know!

It depends of your style of playing I would say?

If you wore frets rapidly with Rotosound before, you will do the same. If you have a light touch and do not bend to much, it should not be a problem.

Right now there are some really old Rotosounds roundwounds set up on my 4001c64. Thinking about it to change them, because all my punch is gone, but I ain't got the money for it right now..

Thanks Jeff. I would consider myself to have a normal to aggressive attack on my lovely V63 !! I will not take the chance and stick with my R.Cocco strings then !!!!

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd see if I could revive this one. I'm looking for round recommendations for my '72 4001. So, a question to start:

Is it generally true that nickel rounds are kinder to frets than are SS rounds?

If so, are the D'Addario XLs a good choice? I don't care for light gauges (i.e., a 0.040 G string and a 0.100 E string), but is my '72 likely to be willing to handle more?

Are Circle K's all SS?

I love the circle k's myself. They are a great compromise between both clanky and smooth sounds,getting both easily. And they feel fantastic. I have been using DR strings (sunbeams and fatbeams mostly) for about a decade or more,but really prefer the 'K's overall.

Yes, I believe most frets are stainless steel. When similar materials cause friction they both wear relatively the same. Softer materials will wear faster when rubbed against a harder material. Stainless steel strings will wear you frets faster than nickel.

Circle K's are a hybrid combination of nickel & steel, according to their site.

On another note, my 4002 likes Curt Mangen strings from PoTR. I'm hesitant to change a thing on her. Why screw with perfection!! However, I will be sending a set of Balanced tension Circle K's to Larry Davis along with my 4002 project bass. I's really like her to be set up for them.

Most fret material has primarily nickel or sometimes brass (Warwick, for example) in it; SS frets are a more modern material (I think Ken Parker was an innovator in this respect), but one I would use if/when re-fretting an instrument.

D'addario Nickels, 45-105.

Played these for a good while now - use them on both my Ric and P-bass - great strings that really bring a nice tone IMHO.

I recently swapped the stock Ric strings that came with my new 4003 MG for a set of Roto '66's.
