I want the binding to be like it would have been when done at the factory. I thought the binding would have to go on after fretting so the binding could be filed down to meet the fret ends. I didn't think that would work the other way around.

Wiker wrote:Great work :D How did fixing of the chips come out?

Yes, the binding should come on after the frets.
The chips all came out pretty good actually. Most of the repaired damage is under the new frets so can't be seen but other repairs aren't noticeable.

A bit of an update. Last weekend I routed the body and headstock for the chequerboard binding. Today I put the binding on the headstock. The tape's still on but it looks to have come up ok.

It's coming along nicely, Wayne. Love the 8) Chequered bound headstock ! A very enjoyable project to follow your pictorial-history postings. I wonder if Gibsondependable would recognize it now ?

Thanks Rich, and no, I don't think they'd recognise it now lol. I'll get started on the body binding next week and once that's done it'll be ready for paint. It's been an enjoyable experience bringing this old girl back from the brink.

I think it's fair to say that the 4001 headstock looks quite good bound with chequer binding :D

I got the binding on the body today. Hopefully, I'll be scraping and putting the white on tomorrow.
The longer pieces are a bit more awkward than the headstock...

I got the white binding on yesterday and got it all scraped down today. I'm pretty happy with the way it's come up.

I was a bit apprehensive about doing the binding but it was a lot easier than I was expecting. I'll probably do the neck this weekend.

Putting the white around the CB really sets it off and makes it. Looking really nice and I'm waiting to see it finished. Great progress.

I managed to bury my hobby knife blade in my thumb yesterday so today might be a quiet day indoors, putting the neck binding on...
