Officially, Do Most Ric Owners Own More Than One?

There are many brands and models of instruments that have their own quirks. One example is the the brand that has many models that you have to remove the neck from (which, of course, means loosening and/or removing the strings each time) to allow adjusting the truss rod in it! Any guess as to who that brand is?

I had to laugh at these posts. I've had mine since 1969 and you got to be a masochist to have more than one of these quirky *** guitars.

My post was written in humor, no offense. As a long time Ric owner let me say I love mine it looks great, plays great and sounds great and it never fails to blow minds when I play it.

I feel like I have every expediency covered with a Rick 12, a Gretsch, and a telecaster.

You do. The only thing I might suggest is to add a hot Gibson with humbuckers to your stable. Les Paul or an SG (which is an affordable top guitar) would definitely add some rockin' grit to your collection.

I'm not BB King, Dicky Betts, nor Merle Travis (all Gibson players). Except for those three guitarists, I've never been a fan of Gibson style humbuckers. In fact, when friends suggested that I should add an electric guitar to the tool chest, I thought Gibson and Gibson inspired guitars, and Fender Stratocasters were all there was. Glad I discovered Rickenbackers, or I'd still be one of those folk curmudgeons who refuse to plug in, and barely tolerate microphones.

It may not be the brand you're referring to,but I had to do that with my post millenium Korean Danelectro Hodad bass. But only once,the neck on that bass was very stable. (And a great sounding player,too!)

I usually have only had one at a time,but in the last decade,while i still had my 4002,i bought a 4000,sold the 4002 to get a Cii,and decided 2 was enough of an investment. Then certain opportunities came up,from this very wellspring,to buy an early ('93) V63,with no real cash to do so,knowing i would sell one of my 2 basses to cover funds. As it turned out,I resold the V,because i preferred the basses I already had. I was content with them for several years,and then opp #2 came up to get a customised Laredo,again figuring i would need to resell one of the 2 basses i already had. An interesting thing happened when the Laredo arrived i absolutely loved it,but when i started trying to figure out which of my other 2 "children" to sacrifice,I wasn't able to do it.(and still can't several,years later)! The 3 basses have so many differing characteristics,they each bring something very unique to the table. So,for me 3 seems to be the magic number.

I have to say that I'm really glad that I DO own more than one Rick - at the moment, only my 4001v63, my 4002 and my 4003/s8 are in playable condition. The perennial problem with buying over the internet is that you're never quite sure what you'll get (even from supposedly safe sources! )

* My 4001 "Shadow" fretless (apparently made in 1976, no reliable S/N to confirm) needed a new nut and still needs a lot of work doing to correct the negative neck angle (causing an unplayable action) and resolve some electrical problems;
* my 1982 4001 fretless needed extensive work to the fingerboard and neck angle to get it playable;

In such cases, (in one, the eBay advert was, at best, misleading), I only discovered the problems with the instruments once they arrived. I do wonder sometimes whether these guys who sold me those instruments have any consciences, or might even regret selling them if they only knew how well they now play (or will play) once I've paid good money to local luthiers to make them playable.

Whilst my patience with some online sellers wears very thin (one of whom is a senior member here - he knows who he is ), I'm confident that once I get the necessary work done, I'll have five Ricks that I'll be happy to work with live. I'm just glad I had other instruments to fall back and rely upon, to get me through gigs...

No, there seems no chance of that. I'm currently faced with a £245 bill to get all the issues fixed.

At least he's now sent me the correct case that was advertised. The time will doubtless come when someone blows the whistle on this sort of seller - then we'll all be forewarned about buying from them, instead of blindly trusting their reputation....
