Let's start here for one possible place to harvest serial numbers.
Another place - luthiers who apparently lose the real s/n plate for your instrument and replace it with a more recent one, perhaps so that another instrument they're working on appears to have an earlier date, therefore greater value?
If anyone happens to have a s/n plate showing PC1997, it actually belongs to a bass that I own, and I'd dearly love to re-attach it to its rightful owner.

Yeah. I had the same problem with mine Ash. Apparently the chap got in a muddle and kept my 68 serial plate and affixed an 80's plate by "mistake". Others have had vintage parts replaced with modern ones "by accident".……

During our recent kitchen renovation the electrician tossed out an original 1930 decorative Bakelite light switch wall plate and replaced it with a generic Home Depot white plastic one! Needless to say I was not pleased especially since nobody has yet to actually admit they screwed up; at least, with some research on my part, I found one and got the contractor to buy it to replace the disposed of one.
