Okay...I hope I'm not stepping on any toes here, but I just find this humorous:

One guy buys the bass, takes delivery of it, and is VERY disappointed that it has a re-issue pickup. He then searches high and low to find the correct pickup. But he does finds that pickup, installs it in the bass, and then offers it for sale. The new buyer takes delivery of his new bass and is disappointed with its period correct pickup. He then removes it and replaces it with the same pickup it had in the first place!

The bass is probably thinking: "What the heck, humans?!"

And what I now want to know is...Did he leave the bass-cut capacitor in the circuit, or did he bypass it?

From what I understand, Geddy stopped playing 4001's in the first place because he wasn't getting enough low end out of them. Maybe if he or his tech knew about bypassing the cap he might not be so quick to retire that beautiful old 4001 when his tour is over.

His tech, Skip Gildersleeve (R.I.P.) DID know about the cap.

The main reason that Geddy 'retured' the Rick is because he was tired of the sound. He felt that he had taken 'that' tone as far as he could after Signals.....

Yup, she sure does look like my former bass.

Sepp, I just got home from hearing her sing on Red Barchetta tonight in Las Vegas. Oh....My.....Lord!!!!!! It was the most perfect sounding bass of the entire night. Even better than the 4080 (by far!) which was suffering in the mix at that time. She sang like it was the last song in the entire world to sing.

I think I remember Ged having a black doubleneck when I saw them in KC a few weeks ago. "Xanadu"; the tone was pretty much amaze-balls. I really liked how the 4005 sounded too ("Closer To The Heart"). The 60s/70s 4001 ("Camera Eye") had a pretty good sound as well but was my least favorite of the bunch. Still, all the Rics were up there with every one of his better sounding Jazzes (the "Tom Sawyer" Jazz/rig/whatever sounded magnificent, but on some of the songs with Jazz Basses involved I was not a fan of the "neutered" tone). I'd put the doubleneck's tone as the best of the night. There was also a non-reverse T Bird ("Jacob's Ladder", I think) with great tone.

He used the black 4080 again last night. unfortunately something seemed to go wrong with the bass pedal used in the intro of Xanadu because it kept holding the same note quite loudly throughout the entire part of the intro where the bass and drums come in. It never changed with the chords and effectively buried the bass. I saw fingers flying but heard very little coming out.

Geddy just took us on a video tour of the basses he is using on this current tour - including all the RICS. He explains them well. The FG 4080 is from 1980. The JG 4080 is from 1975 - and is not his original one which is in the Museum of Civilization outside of Ottawa.

Last night in Vegas. Jump to 5:30 for the '68 4001 content. I still say it was the best sounding bass all night.

Great vid! I recognize most of those basses from KC. Seems like the white '72 Jazz was one of the really good ones as well as the refin Jazz, and that Shoreline P too.

I remember wondering if that solid bass was in fact a Hofner so I'm glad to know I wasn't crazy...
