With all the previous work put in, Larry is now on a position to start to fit things together:

The template for the new V2 tailpiece is fitted, although I have two spare (a 72 & 73, plus the original) Aluminum Gap tooth tailpieces I decided to go with the new V2 tailpiece for this,
in my opinion, combining the best of the "old", e.g. a real Magnetised Horseshoe pickup, C64 Tuning machinery, along with the new, a V2 Tailpiece, and, one of Dane's wiring harnesses, will make for a better 4001 overall

As you can see with the work Larry did earlier to fill the hole left by the Badass, once the new tailpiece is installed there will be no visible sign that the Badass was ever there

The more I see the Ebony Fretboard the more I love it

No signs of the previous bridge, and as you can see, Larry has gone through and plugged a lot of the random holes that'd been drilled in the body over the years

Here's a close up of the matching Ebony Wings, the old Nut is going to be replaced with an Ebony one, cut to my preferred string gauge

Here's a nice shot of the back of my 4001, some really nice grain on this particular 4001, and, no it's not getting MapleGlo'd

Oh nooooo...........
Oh nooooo...........
Way back Larry and I had discussed the fact that the neck may need to be physically reset, we had held out hope that this would not be the case,
however, once the neck was under full tuning tension this is where the action is, this is after the saddles on the new Bridge had been lowered as far as they could go, sadly this will mean the neck has to be reset.

ps ... I spoke with Larry and passed along the best wishes from the Forum, he is doing well, and was delighted to hear that everyone has been enjoying the journey.

More to follow on the task of resetting the neck

The old & new approach makes complete sense to me Jim, and it’s likely what I’d be doing in your shoes.

Such a shame about having to have the neck reset though. Fingers crossed it does the job!

Glad to hear Larry is ok. He’s a good man.

That's curious on the bridge, have you considered routing the bridge into the body rather than resetting the neck?
Could it be the replacement is actually higher profile?

I still can't get over the amazing grain matching on that patch.

I'm sure Larry would be please as punch to create a new route in the body to sink the V2 into!

Larry will correct the neck angle the proper way. 8)

That's not a terrible idea, but it seems kind of like trying to fix a haircut by cutting more on the one side... then you have to cut more on the first side... etc etc, then you're shopping for hats.

Whilst the neck definitely looks like it needs a reset, I too wondered if the new bridge is a higher profile, especially considering the modern necks sit higher in the body (the fingerboard is higher too) than the old ones.

An adventure for the brave at heart. Thanks for continuing to update the progress. Best of luck on the neck reset.

Alright fair enough, but how do you reset a neck thru bass?
I understand the technique on a bolt on neck, no problem.

Cut off the body wings and correct the angle there?
Take the fingerboard off and plane the neck again?

This will be interesting to see what fix is implemented.

It usually involves things such as spreading, stretching, blocking, plugging, gluing, etc.

I was thinking a like the "ramp" on a 325/330. That assembly looks a lot like an Accent vibrato....

I was wondering the same thing.

I hope you're doing some sort of translucent finish. That's really great wood grain.

Fantastic thread! This is why the forum is much better than FB.
