Having owned a fretless 4003 for awhile now, and also having owned several short scale basses (which I much prefer) my wishlist to the elves in Santa Ana would be the following:
A Rickenbacker 4030W-FL (fretless unlined fingerboard)
A Rickenbacker 4005XC-FL (fretless unlined fingerboard in a mapleglo finish

I rate the chances of this actually coming to pass a just slightly higher than the chances of winning the Megalotto for $1 billion US dollars!

I second that. Though what Im after is a bit different, it is probably equally impossible: a fretless 4000. I even bought a fretted one with the intention of defretting it...and just couldn't bring myself to do it. It is such a great tone machine as is.

It happened. Don't know how many came out of the factory, but at least this one did:

it looks a LOT like this….a 2008 factory fretless 4003 converted to a single pickup with a 4000 series pickguard.
This one also has hipshot tuners and a hipshot ric replacement tailpiece. it will have a white TRC and Pickguard within the next couple of weeks!

Yeah, I agree that if you're only going to have three knobs, a blend would be better than two master volumes. Though to be honest I'd rather just have BVV. I've never found tone knobs useful.

I find a master tone indispensable, and preferable to individual tone controls. There’s lots of times I don’t want ALL the treble the Rick gives.
Not sure how having 2 individual volumes AND a balance control wouldn’t be superfluous.

So….did you do it yet?
(Personally, I think the black pg/trc looks magnificent on this very dark beauty!)

Looks nice either way!

Besides my 4000 FL BG (not currently for sale), I think that I have seen two others over the years pop up for sale. Not very common.

My tone knobs all stay all the way up. I've even removed them from a couple of my basses. The only thing I use them for on my Rickenbackers is the push-pull control.

I mean my preference with only three control holes would be two volumes and a switch. With a VVB you could set the volumes to different amounts and rapidly change between pickups for a change in volume.
