Confused about sound please help

Interesting item on the Spock's Beard website about Meros' setup... he has a modified 4001 with 4 pickups.. the 2 normal ones and 2 where Jazz pickups would be located. The Spock's Beard albums are the only recent recordings I know of that have that heavy Squire kind of Ric sound... any others? Meros seems to just use the Digitech RP-21D in the studio to get that sound. I can get fairly close with a v63 using a Sansamp Bass Driver, and EQ and a bit of overdrive on a Boss SE-70 (crank up 1.25 kHz, take out a little at 200Hz), and even some decent results running straight into a computer with the Amplitube plug-in. I'm anxious to try the new Ampeg bass amp plug-in from the same people who make Amplitube once it comes out...
