Can't vouch for the squirrels in Dixieland, but you gotta shoot an awful lot of those tree rats up here in Kaunsaslaund to get even a mouthful.

That was great! I wonder how many people here realize that the letters associated with the numbers on the phone had nothing to do with spelling contact names? I do vaguely remember phone numbers using the 2 letter 5 number format, though that particular film is a bit before my phone usage days...

I clearly remember those phones; I began making phone calls that same year (1954) and had no idea until now that that was the Year of the Dial. I always thought it was sometime in the late 1940s.

The exchange names were just like street names back then--presidents, geographical, neighborhood references, botanical and animal, and so on.

I lived in Humboldt Park back then and our exchange was HU-6 XXXX (for Humboldt). My parents had that number for 14 years. Then, in 1960, we moved to Logan Square, where it became COrnelia 7, later 267-XXXX. They had this number for 43 years!

I have trouble recalling their latest number. Fortunately it's in my iPhone's directory...

I remember the letter/number combos. Ours was Fireside, which was just a fancy name and no relation to the city or neighborhood. She talked about having to dial those letters but if you were calling someone in the same exchange, just dialing the 5 numbers would work. Also, you used to be able to dial 61011 and hang up and it would ring back your own number. If you had an extension upstairs and wanted to talk to someone downstairs, you'd dial that, hang up, then time picking it up when someone downstairs answered, and you could talk.

Seems like it was late 60s or early 70s (??) when they did away with the letters and just used the numbers that corresponded. I've had the same land line number we presently have since about 1975. Moved 3 times but the number moved with me. We still have a pulse dial phone in the basement but I believe AT&T quit supporting pulse dialing a few years back. I'll have to try it when I get home. I leave it plugged in because with it on the line (and princess phones in 2 bedrooms) we don't lose the cheaper made phones when lightning strikes - better spike protection.

Oh yeah, I remember the ringback number, and the in-exchange dialing with shorter numbers. In fact, when we lived in Idaho, we could still use the last 4 digits and dial other folks in the area. Seems to me they finally got rid of that sometime around 1998, when they ran the fiber-optic lines down the road and we got a modern system with native touch-tone. Up until then, if you used touch-tone you could hear the old pulse dialing equipment chunking away in the background...

Interestingly, the pulse dialing was just a mechanical switch that as it rotated it made and broke the line. You could dial by evenly tapping the button in the cradle that hangs the phone up with the correct number of pulses for the number you wanted. Three even quick taps for a 3, 7 even quick taps for a 7, etc., just so long as it broke the line.

That is crazy Johnny! how could any of that be possible???!??!? Next thing they'll be saying is you need to be strip searched to get on an airplane... man, where do people come up with these notions?
