He used it when he came to Perth last year, there was paint coming off the back & the chrome on 1/2 the HS was gone but it really was his RM1999. I thought it sounded great. He used that fenderish thing once & the triple neck once. In contrast, I couldn't keep count of how many guitars Steve Howe used & how well drilled he & his roadie were.

Well, here are some recent pics of Squire with a Rick, but it's not THAT one (scroll down a little):

Geez, even HE seems to have a hard time getting a replacement truss rod cover!

"Geez, even HE seems to have a hard time getting a replacement truss rod cover!"
That's because IT'S A FAKER.

I was wondering myself; those inlays look a little strange, but those aren't very good shots of the bass.
Why would he use a faker, though? I'd probably let him borrow one of mine if he's hard up.

Trust us, it's a faker, we've been over it many times.
Let the guy play what he wants, I say...
No crime in playing a faker to have a jam/practice on, hell - if it sounded better than his RM, I'd say use it indefinitely.

There was a thread about these photos a couple months back. He probably just picked up a bass in the studio and somebody fired off a few photos. I'm guessing he wouldn't own a Fakenbacker.

I doubt it sounded better than his RM, Henny!

Oh, goodness... please don't take the thread down this road, I'll be flamed. Pure rhetoric.
NB -
Mark does not believe Rickenfakers sound better than RM1999s, especially Chris's.

The finish looks like Peter Hook's faker.

Maybe that's why it didn't have the trussrod cover on it in the first place. Squire worked closely with JH on the Ltd. Ed. so he probably knows the issues with it...

I think Chris Squire used this bass on the Yes Album ...

I think so too, Jeff, and I think he definitely used it for at least one track of "The Fish", because that bass is a 21 fret, and there is one note that I could never reach on my 20 fret neck, but it comes very easy on the 21 fretter... Most of the pics I've seen of that bass seem to have come right around the time that Peter Banks left the band and was replaced by Steve Howe, so I wonder if it went to that little country cottage where they recorded "The Yes Album". I REALLY would place my bets on that bass being used on "Your's is no Disgrace", it just sounds, different from his RM1999... Anyone else want to weigh in on this?

There's one more thing I noticed about fakers. Their white pickguards age and yellow over time, whereas Ric pickguards remain white. Squire's faker has what looks like a cream-colored pickguard.

I was out of town for a bit and off line. Ask one Squire question at a time and I will answer them. First, Chris’s bass, though it has a very thin neck, is set up with higher action than normal. As far as the pick up’s being weak, it’s not true. The horseshoe was weak at one time. Chris told me the Rickenbacker factory recharged the magnets. He said the bass sounded awful for a few years until the overcharged magnets settled down. By the way, hey Jeff, the 67 is great. A tiny surprised by the amount of wear on the back.
