I think that the All You Need Is Love video on the anthology is colorized. The original was B&W, and the video on the anthology has the colors on Paul's bass completely different...the blue is silver!

The real Paul would have never allowed overspray on his pick guard.

I believe that psychedelic artist called "The Fool" did it.

You'd think he'd have enough sense to take off the pickguard first.

My information says Paul, John and Ringo got together at George's house one night and smoked some pot. Out came the paints and George painted Rocky (with the help of Patti's nail varnish), Ringo painted his bass drum head (orange with "Love Beatles" on it), Paul painted the RIC and John sprayed the back of his Casino with grey spray paint. Later, John had "The Fool" paint his acoustic with a wavy blue and grey "psychedelic" pattern.

"The Fool" was a collective of several people, as I recall.

How were they (or were they?) connected to "Magic Alex"?

I've forgotten and all my reference books are South of the Borders.

Magic Alex was an "electronic wizard" coming from Greece while The Fools were a group of hippies dealing with fashion styling (2 girls and a guy if I remember) coming from Holland...

It's weird how often someone on here says The Fool painted Paul's 4001S, when there are so many interviews with Paul telling the story of how he did it.

Bad information proliferates particularly well in our cybernetically-enhanced awareness.

And misinformation is spread in other ways. My local oldies radio station claimed yesterday that "On this day in 1969 the Beatles held their last public performance on the roof of Abbey Road studios. They had been working in the studio and decided four days earlier to move their gear onto the roof to entertain the public during the lunch hour." Obviously, most Beatle fans would know that they performed on the roof of Apple Records. They had been working in the basement studio, that incidentally was designed by 'Magic Alex'. He promised a state-of-the-art studio, but it was never used for anything more than rehearsal. Besides studio equipment that never worked properly, background noise levels caused by HVAC equipment made it unsuitable for recording.

Magic Alex was a hanger-on that should have been unhanged from the get-go. Not only did he waste a ton of money on his foolish inventions (speaker wallpaper, that studio, etc), he appears to have been the one who originally cooked up the allegations against the Marharishi on the Beatle retreat in India. Cynthia in particular didn't buy it at all and thought it was shameful (but ironically ended up sleeping with Mr. Alex, giving Lennon legitimate grounds for divorce). The allegations against the Maharishi are yet another Beatle myth that's accepted as fact, even though the claims against him are dubious at best.
And oh yeah, the Fool did NOT paint John's Rolls-Royce either! They painted his piano, the exterior of the Apple Boutique, and did the paper sleeve of "Pepper", and not much else, although they did have a fairly large role in stocking the Apple Boutique.

I think the Fool also painted John's Gibson...didn't they?

Well, the fabs were only keeping up with the times. After "The Fool" type heyday, there was an "herbal" backlash (herbs are what we used to call the earthy hippie types like CS&N), and the fabs sanded thier guitars and now we have the wonderful C64S!

The fluidity of pop music and art is part of it's appeal. For every movement, eventually there will be a counter movement - Pre-packaged safe Elvis clones, then the Fabs and the Brit invasion; Prog and virtuoso rock musicians, then punk;, hair and spandex metal, Nirvana and grunge. And so it goes.
