Ever hear the Stones version of that? It snears right off the CD, it's great, much slower and bluesier. That was their second single I believe and Lennon-Mccartney wrote it for them.

Story is that the Stones needed a single and asked L&M, who were either observing the session or in the next studio, if they had any stuff. L&M said, "We have this but it doesn't have a middle eight." So they played what they had, Mick liked it, and L&M went down the hall for five minutes and came back with the middle eight (which is just the title repeated four times, but used rather inventively). Pretty interesting insight into how they worked.

Yipes, Andrew! "Mamumia" is bound to become one of the most played songs in Boomer retirement homes...it just sounds like a stroke, doesn't it?

No it sounds like some exotic disease gotten from some new deadly virus only found in Africa.

At least I'm not the only only who thinks this way about Mamumia. Great descriptions of the song's sound, Dane and Bob!

I really love just about all the L&M stuff, except: Yellow Submarine, Revolution#9, and
Within You Without You and I wanna be your man,
(by the beatles or anyone else for that matter, stinks!
On the positive side, NOBODY has ever produced
such an enormous catalog of music that grew by
leaps and bounds in quality over a ten year period. They are the standard that all others are judged by and simply the best of all time!

I like maybe 70-75% of Pauls stuff.....the rest of it , I don't even consider it "filler" mat'l....

70-75% is pretty good though, considering he wrote , what, 4 million songs? ;^)

One Beatles solo that always annoyed me a bit is the piano bit on "IN MY LIFE" (which was played by George Martin, I believe). It's a very nice solo but I think Martin ruined it with its very abrupt ending.

Oh, and yes, Yellow Sub was one of the worst Beatle songs. But it was (and still is) loved by kids so for that it's worthwhile.

While the Beatles are my favorite group, they produced a few clunkers. Most of these clunkers come from the post-touring days: "Wild Honey Pie", "Revolution #9", "You know my name, look up the number" are consensus picks, while "Drive my Car" is marginal owing to it's simplistic appeal to toddlers ("Beep-Beep m Beep-Beep yeah!").
"Blue Jay Way", "Within You Without You" make my list. "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is another. Interestingly all these numbers found thier way onto vinyl AFTER Brain Epstien died. Hmm...

"Drive my Car" marginal ???? YIPES! IMHO, it's one of their best rockers. Great stuff. Apparently Paul agrees since he's made it a stable of his post-Beatle touring.

Hmmmm, come to think about it I disagree on the other ones too with the possible exeption of Revolution #9 which was John trying oh so hard to be as avant-garde as Yoko. I have John on a record saying that it was "like an action painting" meaning that it was not scripted. He said that he thinks he did it twice and the second one was the "take". I've never hear of the alternate version coming to light if it even exists.

But its a good point you make about a bunch of lesser / weirder stuff coming out after Brian dies. I have a feeling that that stuff would have come out anyways as Brian's infuence over the group was lessening after the stopped touring..... on the other hand I might be wrong! We'll never know.

Well, wasn't the White Album a double album simply to fulfill their original contract (they owed two albums), and thus renegotiate a better one? That's my take on why TWA has a bit of weird filler on it.

But that's the "interesting" stuff...Wild Honey Pie, etc. Long, Long, Long I think is a very good, underrated song.

I've given careful thought to each of these Beatles' tunes and I find I can't dislike any of them...and then I think of "Silly Love Songs"...

I think what we've proved in this thread is that in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make. One man's trash is another's treasure. Any other cliches apply?
