Thanks for your "votes" guys, but I'll make a decision on the color chips and what Paul W. thinks will look good. It's likely at this time to be purple or orange, but Paul W. may have some others to consider. It used to be Mapleglo, and I had attempted to refinish it myself back in 1975. I'm not really crazy about Mapleglo, so I'm going with some other translucent color so the wood grain can be seen. The work Ted has done is magnificent, and I can barely recognize the old girl. The finish that Paul W. will apply will be the icing. I'm not concerned with making it strictly vintage, and none of my basses that I've kept in my collection are 100% factory equipped any longer. I kinda like ones that are different. Ted and I will keep you informed of the progress, but likely the bass will go to Paul W. this week.

Here is a shot of the nubs being cut. In the center you can see the basic forming of the nubs. To either side the original binding height can be seen. There is masking tape on the fingerboard and the side of the neck.

That's a lot of work! Did the factory do it that way?

It could be Jeff. I don't know for sure. I can tell you that the tool marks on my work look just like the ones I see on factory work.

Gretch orange would be very nice with checker binding Paul. Simply stunning.

When I saw the orange, I thought of you Paul, and thought I'd throw it up for an example.

The guitarist in my old blues band had a similar Guild model, it was the same shade of orange, but transparent.

Jeff....I don't think you would want to do that to a limited edition instrument like a Shadow, would you?

You gotta admit though Steve . It sure would look cool with the checkerboard binding .

The latest on the "PB-1" project is that the bass has arrived at Paul Wilczynski's Magicwerks in California, and a decision has been made on the color to go on it. Paul will probably be posting photos when he gets to the application. The color I chose is something we call "mink" and it can best be described as a burst of brownish purple. Or is is purplish brown? OK, if you know what the "eggplantglo" versions of Burgundy look like, imagine that in a burst. The inspiration for this was a custom painted Gibson Les Paul I remember seeing in Colorado in 1978. So among Rick basses, this one should be unique - - for a while, anyway. Watch: RIC will make it next year's Color of the Year. Hey, where's my royalty?!
