Using thicker pickguard material wont help at all. The bottom surface of the guard is still be in the same place regardless of how thick it is. This would only work if you could remove some of the material around the pickup mounting area under the guard, placing it higher inside the guard. You could also raise the guard with pickup grommets like RIC did in the 50's. Putting the pickups on top of body would make the bass look more like a Lemmy, which is cool since you already have a 4002.

"This is better than Dynasty or Melrose Place."
Nothing personal, Scott or Jeff, but that wouldn't take much...
Interesting checkered binding, Ted. I, like Scott, can't wait to see the finished product, but I also really enjoy the journey!

That is true Dane.

But I would relieve the underside of the guard around the pickups slightly to allow them them to sit higher.

The ugliest part of a 4002 was the pickguard ... so I vote no pickguard on you bass Ted ...

Without a guard it wouldnt even have a resemblance to a 4002 anymore, so you might as well make something else and take the pickup config of a 4004 LK.

I think an interesting option keeping in character with a 4002 would be an upper guard made of .100" thick black acrylic stacked on top of a lower guard made of white acrylic also .100" thick. You'd get the additional pickup height you need and have the black/white multi-ply look.

I would hardly consider anything relating to anyone making, selling, wanting, discussing or pondering anything about a 4002 to be Spam.
