The 1999 the "Yellow Submarine" DVD 5.1 remixes and 'Songtrack' release and were very well done by Peter Cobbin and company. That was a tasteful stereo/multi channel remix project.
But just listen to the difference between "Eleanor Rigby" on the 5.1 movie soundtrack (DVD Audio) and the one presented on "Love" in 5.1 DVD Audio. The latter is far more subtle and takes you to another place altogether as you are truly surrounded. In the last refrain, Paul is singing while sitting on the couch right next to you! Any harshness from previous versions is just plain gone. Fantastic!
This release makes it painfully clear that after George Martin is done (as he now states he is), a project like "Love" could not - and should not - be undertaken again. There will be no longer be a link to the original creative force that was The Beatles on record.
Sir George was there in the studio, making the artistic decisions with the band. You can obviously hear it on this new release. And he's practically deaf! His contribution to The Beatles catalog cannot be over estimated. No one else has the qualifications, experience and instinct (and therefore the right) to do another “mash-up” of these classic works.
