This should be interesting - that fretboard has more than a few miles on it.

Wow, I revisited this thread today. So much has changed since it started.
The project is no longer what I originally planned on. It only took me owning two 325/12's to realize I don't like short scale 12-strings.
Some of the posters in this thread don't post anymore.

Sadly, Arthur Clarke has passed away.
It really makes you think, doesn't it?
Maybe not. I'm just bored and waiting for 5 o'clock. I saved our company about $50K in taxes today (legally, too!) so I don't feel too bad about sitting on a$$ for the next half hour.

So what have you done with the guitar since stripping it bare?

+1
As in, is it available.

Paul tells me it is painted now, after some trickiness. I'll let him expand on that if he likes.
Not available. I am currently tulip-free, so this will be my only one once I get it back. It's 5 serials away from the '64 1000 JG in the RIC museum.

Wow. What a long, hard road it's been...
No...I'm exaggerating here a good deal. I think it would be better said that this "surprised" me. Now, JDog has shifted his position on this guitar's final, completed configuration, a few times now, which is his prerogative. (I've got a couple of the specifications taped to the wall of my spay booth as reminders of where it needs to be).
The surprise comes, not from the Dawg, but from what was going on under the factory paint. I'm talkin' about lots of scratches that didn't show up until I got the guitar stripped, sanded (with #320, which is what I use both under and over sanding sealer), sealed, and final color on it. Then some DEEP scratches from under the JG came to light. JG hides a lot, and once it's been varnished and sanded, nobody's the wiser, as the pint and varnish fill in any scratches. These must've been done with #80 grit paper, which is what I use to shape necks after an initial go-over with a rasp!
So, sand off the color, and keep sanding until the scratches are gone. Done by hand, incidentally, since at the time I thought the scratches would come out easily.
Nice and smooth, seal, sand again, re-do color.
Bang. More scratches, though not so many this time.
Long story short: FOUR times is was sanded and painted. The last time, there were only a few scratches along the edges, and finally it's scratch-free. No question that I shoulda power-sanded it the first time, as then the second would be a charm. This weekend it gets clearcoat/varnish, which is why I don't want to show any pics yet, as the color and color scheme is unusual and I want to show it in its shiny state.
Anyway, the fact that the scratches showed only after the finished color was on (and then, only in certain lights!) should give a good clue as to the final color, as there are only a handful of vintage Rick colors that would show scratches easily both before and after varnish shiny coat.

Here you go:
As you can see, we went "vintage" with it. It will have a gold acrylic guard and gold TRC, too.
