Brian, i'd rather keep it simplified. At most i'd do concentrics, but I could live without them. It's part of the charm of the 4004.

I've found with roundwound strings, particularly with HB1's, that I always run the tone wide open anyway. For this reason I wired my 4004MID in stereo with two volumes and a selector switch. I feel that flatwounds require more tone control, so I did concentrics in stereo on my 4004MG soon to be fretless.

A few more pics, with her strung up, and with the vintage reissue TRC:

I think it looks very cool JB.

I do wonder how it would look with the controls centered in the guard area with a placement shifted towards the centerline a little more...

Additional routing would be required to do that as well as adding any more controls.

If the PG were made larger like the one on the experimental '60s 4001 in the Smith book, I think the controls would center nicely.

I meant drilling the holes in the guard a bit more to the right Dane...not moving the control cavity!

Or maybe I misunderstood?

Does anyone have a pic of the first generation RCA 4004 that was on Ebay a few years ago?

If I remember right it had a similar "gold" guard.

Maybe even oven knobs?

It really looked cool.

I've always thought the 4004 could use a pickguard. The top looks too bare (unless there's some really nice wood - cue Jared).

I like the look. I like the contrasting colors.

I wish I had taken a photo of the RCA 4004, Scott. It did have a similar gold guard, but I don't remember oven knobs. I think the solid black "vintage" knobs would look good against a gold guard.
