i sold the bass to pay off some debt, so that mountain is just a mole hill now.

i guess i'll have to look around for a good deal.

Paul, I was feeling guilty having 4 figure kits I haven't built yet!

BTW, just to clarify, I only have 3 Rics at the mo.

i have 9 basses, and i love 'em all,but have often thought-why? do i hang on to them... the best reason i can justify is i will pull one out that i haven't played in a long while and rediscover something new about playing a familiar song...there will probably be a "luxury distress" sale at some future point in my life, but for now i'm loving it. my favorite of them all is also the newest acquisition,a maple 4004cii-I LOVE that bass!

Scott,

Keep your eye out for a V63. It will be somewhat like what you are used to.

er, feel I should chime in here, in defence of us collectors! (both the house full of basses AND the loft full of plastic kits - guilty!) I never meant to collect Rickenbackers, as a young player I just got sucked in and it was just such fun! I was probably lucky in that I did most of my discovering before the internet opened up the world of vintage gear, for better or worse. As someone who just remembers the Beatles on the radio when they were STILL together, yet still plays with a passion in several amateur bands, its still totally OK in my eyes to get fun out of music and loads of instruments! I'm playing the 100Club end of the month, and a fortnight back Bruce Foxton signed my old Azureglo warhorse, so I'll stay a happy ex punk amateur and enjoy the little extras that music still brings me... my favourite bass is the next one............!!!

No offence meant Simon...I completely understand how the collecting thing happens. If I had loads of money, doubtless I'd have basses coming out of the woodwork, hopefully just like you! The problem is, I'd still feel REALLY GUILTY about it! Time for the psychiatrist's couch, methinks....

Quote -" My favourite bass is the next one...." guilty as charged, your honour!

Simon, I'll not only have to come down and check out your collection (maybe after I get my Azure conversion from Paul if that's ok), but see you play too! Ah, Bruce, he's so great. But when's he gonna get back to using Rics?

There's nothing wrong with collecting. It's just the nature of the beast. One does it because one can...

Love him or hate him, Vincent Gallo is certainly one individual responsible for the big increase in vintage Ric bass prices across the board.

5 years ago this '67 would have probably fetched less than half than the figure Scott quoted...

i got into collecting them by accident as well. bought a '79 4001 when my band decided to get back together to record an album. a previous ebay auction i 'won' seemed like a deadbeat/scam; then it showed-up.

my appreciation of them in regards to their playability, craftsmanship, lineage and aesthetics grew.

last fall scholarship money rolled in for my final year of graduate school and i spent nearly all of it on Rics. i figure i am investing in my retirement fund - if i ever give them up (oh - 8 and counting).

There is nothing wrong with collecting, that is part of the natural progression of things. people love old things especially when they are functional works of art. I collect Antique communications receivers along with antique ham transmitters. I restore them and use them. That will happen eventually to any well made desirable piece whether it is a guitar or a ham transmitter.

For what it's worth, which appears to be integrity, and $$$ in the +10k range, here's a pic of a 1967 4001 Deluxe that is NOT owned by Seth Goldfarb aka Vincent Gallo:

Not mine, John. It belongs to a friend of mine who's arm I've been trying to twist into becoming a member here.
