John K. (I'd be smiling too.)
"Dumb question - were all 4002's equipped with black pg's?"
Yes.
And John B....

Hey, great thread (up until the last pages

). Are there any other threads on the nitty gritty and finer details of the 4002 pickups? I'd like to read more.

I'm sure they were discussed a number of other times on this forum.
But how to find the threads? Me no know!

I've looked at a handful and most of them really don't get down to the finer points. Most of the time they are just mentioned and referred to in some mystical way. I'll try a fourth time (count 'em) but so far I haven't found any threads that were nearly so informative as this one--and none that address just the pickups. It's been many months since I tried though.
Anyways, just thought I'd ask. Thanks! Again, great thread.

I've done some recording and gigs with my recently acquired 4002 and came up with a couple of observations. First, I didn't realize that using the XLR connection only engages the bridge pickup (I wonder what the thought was behind this wiring?). Also I find that cranking the tone controls acts like a mid-range boost. Very different than a 4003! I think the ebony board also contributes to the mid-range projection of the 4002 - any bass I've played with an ebony board seems to share this characteristic.

Well, if you're not happy with it, I'll gladly take it off your hands.

When did I say I wasn't happy with it?

Quite the contrary - the tone and playability have made the 4002 my favourite Rickenbacker bass!
