Tony, I would have used a horseshoe if I could find one, but the unbuttoned high gain doesn't lack for much in the area of power and brightness. It should be lighter than a 4001 because of the walnut. The 4004FL came out great and was at SoCalRickenfest'07, but I do need to post pics. Paul B. took some nice pics though. While I love the 4004's, especially their nicer choice of woods, I like retro look of a 4001S with it's plexiglass and chrome.

Dane,

You are dead on, I love the classic RIC "S" bass look. You have just made the 4004 A LOT more eye appealing IMHO.

I don't have much experience with the 4004's. I only had one of the original Walnut 4004Ci's.

I liked the light feel of that bass, but it was just SO lacking in lower end, I was buried in the mix every time. But, now that I have a much better rig, I'm hoping my new 4004Cii will kick some butt.

If RIC offered a 4004FL, I'd have ordered one in a minute.

Dane, have you ever thought about a R&D job with RIC! Image

Dane has some great ideas on how to dress up a bass. He should be making money with this talent!

I was diggin' the 4004 that Dane made fretless. I don't like lined fretless basses, but his really sounded and played very nice.

OK, here is a shot of Dane's 4004LFL, lounging on the same couch (at the Holiday Inn during the SoCalConIII):

Note that this has an interesting combination: maple fretboard, but pickups in the "lowered" position. Dane has made it a "lined fretless" and added a "teardrop" pickguard and white TRC. Sorry about the quality. The original is a fairly large file, and to get to the 35k file size, a picture with a lot of detail (like all those pillows) eats up the bytes when reduced.

Paul, this one has frets - the Mapleglo one is the fretless.

That's okay John, my 4004MID needs attention too.

You know how I love my horseshoes, but I've got to say that the dual toasters on this bass look DOPE.

Yeah! I though I had seen that somewhere before!

OK. It's on. Cage match: Jeff Scott's dual-toaster 4001V63FL vs Dane Wilder's dual-toaster 4004V63.

Wouldn't that kinda be like Under Dog vs Mighty Mouse?

BTW, the 4001V63FL is now in the loving (I hope) hands of Alex Heist.

Dane, fantastic and unique looking bass. Could I ask how much it cost (roughly) to put together that beauty (if you don't mind saying of course)? Its making me think ...!
