maybe that's why I never owned a Fender

They're not exclusive to Fender, I was just trying to make a comparison. They're one of the features of 60's and 70's era basses that were rarely utilized.

I think strictly speaking it is a 'finger grip', i.e. grip it with your fingers and play with your thumb. My 4001 had one, but it was never used for that. I used to jam a couple of spare picks under it for emergencies.

I really think the thumbrest/finger grip looks cool, and gives the bass a heap of vintage mojo. I dont know why they dont put them on all the re-issues. Anyway, i finally got around to ordering one from pickguardian for my V63MG.. will post pics when fitted.

you mean it was refinished in the 70's, or a restored 70's finish? I like the transparency.

It was refinished to the GreenGlo, which is/was not a RIC color.
