I've been thinking it would be really cool to paint a guitar with House of Kolor Kameleon paint (there may be other brands too, that's the only one I know of). That's the color shifting semi-metallic paint that changes color depending on lighting and viewing angle. It comes in various colors, I'm kind of partial to the purple to green. Here's a video that gives you the idea of what it's like, but it's MUCH better in person.

Well at $15,000 for the paint job, it is a bit steep for me.

Quite a different look though, hotwheelsglo.

I'd guess a guitar would be a tad cheaper than a car, unless you have a really big guitar...

Oh, dear. I tried this, oh, two years ago, on a Rick 381. It looked AWFUL. I stripped it and it awaits its new color...

IMO this is bad taste SEMA **** show car paint.

Wow, this finish was used by the Curmudgeon. Why am I not surprised. Why is the paint so expensive, Paul?

Interesting. It's sometimes amazing that something can look good on a car and terrible on something else. Perhaps it's a matter of scale. I have to admit, the car in the video doesn't look very good to me, but it was one I found that seemed to give the effect. That one is a bit too gaudy.

I saw one in person at a local car show, it was a deep blue/purple from one angle and shifted to a turquoise green from another. That one I could really see looking good on a guitar, but then again, after Paul's comments, maybe not...

Gibson released a finish like that on Les Paul Studios a few years back...blue to green flip-flop. It looked OK, but not my cup of tea.

I test drove an '96 Mustang with that type of paint job. It wasn't for me either.

I don't think it looks good on that car. Looks like oil sitting in water.

I think the only object finishes that look good in irradescence are ceramic glazes. Paint just doesn't get it. Cj is right on about scale. Looks good on a butterfly, bad on a car. Could be effective used sparingly, a little accent or two somewhere. Irradescent ceramic coated tuning heads? Custom ceramic TRC? Coated trap buttons?

Cranberry glass, perhaps? has anyone seen carnival glass?

I love carnival glass. A friend collects it, quite lovely.

Of course, you realize we're coming dangerously close to discussing a holographic finish?

Uh huh. Monte brown. I've got one just like it, except for custom guards and oven knobs. My first new Rick ever.

Peter, the paint is so expensive because it contains dust from Deimos.

Anyway, just pick a color:
