If we are talking rare, someone I know through mail told me recently that they have a L/H 4002....

Your bass is the oldest 4002 I have run across in the past 11 years--and I've been looking. The bass is already in the Registy on page 2, as I used to live in Oregon.
The following information is at this time unconfirmed--but you might want to confirm it with John Hall, if he is so inclined. When I first bought that 4002 the previous owner indicated that it was #7. Again, unconfirmed.

as you can see in the photos, the work that needed to be done has been and the bass is looking and playing great!

That bass was so beat when I got it. I imagine being able to pick the frets out of the cracked, dry ebony with your fingernail. Arnquist did a decent job on it, but it really looks like you've taken it to the next level.
It's one of the nicest playing RIckenbackers I've held, but the tone didn't suit me and I stopped being a bass collector. Glad it's found a good home with you, Bryce.

Inspired by the asthetics of the 4002 and the 4004LK, I modified my 4004Cii. The bridge pickup is always on with it's own tone and volume while the center and neck pickup are wired with the selector switch like a 4004. As a fretless, the placing of the additional HB1 close to the bridge makes a difference.

I agree about the bridge pickup. The Jazz Bass layout of the 4002 gives it a clear and well-defined sound - full of punch and color.

Could I please get few full sized photo's or your 4004 Fretless?
The 4004 seems like an almost endless platform to start from. 4 string fretless, 5 string fretless, 8 string, the Lemmy configuration, VVT mods, the options go on and on. I'm wondering how a fretless neck made from Ebony would sound on a 4004Cii? A mod I'd love to see & try.

I think Dane's fretless conversion is really cool, plays and sounds great. I like the 3 pickups, I just don't like a pickguard on trans color or mapleglo 4004Cii. Too much nice flamey maple gets covered.

Sounds like you've got the jones for a 4002 real bad Joshua. I think you need to get your hands on one to find out if it's for you or not. Next time you get to Chicago let me know and you can check mine out. ...But you'll have to leave the door open and have a chaperon at all times!
