Oh, those are truly awful.... And there seems to be no end in sight to these testimonies to poor taste.... BLECCCCH!

Sorry to say that you are so right!melibreits wrote:... And there seems to be no end in sight to these testimonies to poor taste ...
Next to the 'Egyptian' ("he gypped 'em"?) monstrosities were these:
There were also these that I found to be literally butt-ugly:
And this one has to have this punch line: "I need this bass like a hole in the head.":

Regarding that pic of the holy bass, that bass actually got an excellent review in either Bass Player or Bass Guitar Magazine (UK), I don't recall which.

That is incredibly offensive.
Is there a reserve?

Trying to cash in on the lingering H-D craze, or something. You're right. It makes no sense.jingle_jangle wrote:Don't these people get the fact that a motorcycle gas tank has nothing to do with a guitar in any way?
I really feel quite sad for the trees that had to die in order for some of these monstrosities to be created.
Re: Knock-Offs, Rip-Offs, and Just Plain UGLY!
Actually, based on the way the fingers are oriented, it would be an "f-Me wiener bass" ... and it is offensive, but I have seen a bass that's even more offensive.captsandwich wrote:

How about this one?

That's the Bumblefoot Swiss Cheese guitar, Sheena.
Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal is from Brooklyn and taught guitar here on SI for many years, including to several close friends. He's now playing with Guns 'n Roses.
He's a seriously good guitar player but has played some seriously ugly axes. See here for the complete list: http://www.bumblefoot.com/index2.htm
Here's his most famous guitar: http://www.bumblefoot.com/gear/guitar08.htm

I've got little to add except that I appreciate the twisted humor present in these, and his implied message seems to be that it's a tool, and those of us who like things shiny and sensible, and perhaps even beautiful, are ignoring the absurd.
I wonder what his living space looks like.

Been awhile, eh?
I'll reopen this thread with an old friend...the red Shelby licensed monstrosity...

...because it now has a sibling, the blue and white Shelby prototype exercise in tasteless commerce at rip-off prices. $5K for this awful mess. There's not a redeeming feature to be found; it's an excess in over-the-top nastiness for the sort of folks who speculate in leisure suit futures. Simply put, it's a rather ordinary Gibbie-style semi-hollow, standard issue, but crammed with more accessories than a vintage JCWhitney summer catalog.
Cobra knobs, badly-designed graphics, headstock with printed super-****. A transparent cover over the...pots and Strat switch (???!!!???), despite the photo caption hinting that these are the pickups. Mustang emblem, Carroll Shelby autograph (of course--he charges $20 from his fans at the racetrack). When you're done admiring and have tucked your gold ankh inside your polyester shirt and buttoned it back up against the cold wind, you can put it into its own silver Tolex case with gold hardware.
This auction even states that it's a handbuilt prototype, so don't expect it to be perfect. Har. Do expect it to be as inappropriate as a beer fart at a nun's rosary meeting.

But there is one redeeming feature, Paul. If you threw it out the window along with some other garbage it would get to the pavement faster, therefore higher terminal speed, therefore maximum damage!!
