You know, when I was shopping around for my Fender about 5 years ago there was this early '80's P- bass made of mountain Ash. I think that thing weighed at least 13 or 14 lbs. I've always thought that weight gave a guitar more solid bottom, that's why I don't mind heavy guitars. A Les Paul for example. Sounds great, lots of sustain & good, full bottom. Weighs a ton compared to strats. Besides, doublenecks are just special! I'll be walking around the house with it for days at a time when I get it!

I'm a fairly "girthy" guy. I have never made a full set playing one yet. THEY ARE HEAVY..

I can't remember how much they're listed weight was. I used to have a catalog back in the early '80's. I spent an awful lot of time drooling over those pages!

I had the ultimate strap for it. When I got my 4000 in '85 it had a thick tooled leather strap with a humongous sheepskin pad on it. The 4000 is actually fairly light, & the strap was UGLY so I gave it away.

No, Bob got the money order today. Shipping tomorrow. It should take a week at least. 5 days by truck (UPS Ground, then Sameday) plus the usual customs nonsense. I'm figuring on the middle or end of the week after next, with the holiday & all (Thanksgiving here in Canada).

My old RIC catalog lists the 4080 at 14.5 lbs.

If I remember correctly, the 4001 was listed at 9 lbs. I've played my 4001 for 1 hour & 20 minutes a couple of times at benefit gigs. My shoulder started getting fatigued after about an hour. I'm getting the widest strap I can find tomorrow. That should spread the load well enough. I'm going to try to use the 4080 at the end of the night when we do some slow grinds with long guitar intros. Things like "Broken","She Talks to Angels", & Wonderful Tonight".

Don't they have a strap that crosses over BOTH shoulders, to distribute the weight better? I know I have seen it somewhere, it kinda looks like a life preserver, though, without the orange fluffy part.

It sounds like what we used to use for the bass drum in the marching band in school. I marched with one in the Phoenix Rodeo parade when I was 17...5 miles through downtown in 105 degrees F. Now that's a younger man's game, for sure.
A bass drum strap might work really well on the 4080...just don't smack anyone in the head when you're doing a 'pinwheel' across the fifty-yard line.

4080 has left the building. She's on her way via UPS in the US & Sameday in Canada. Quite a hassle to ship & insure an item valued over $2500 apparently. Bob said it took him over an hour at UPS to get it done. They put his social security # on the outside of the box too! Very odd! F***ing terrorists are making even fairly simple matters into red tape festivals!
