I would think that given the four lead wiring of an HB1 pickup, that it would be possible to use them in a 4002 wired the same way. Has anyone ever put a coil tap switch on a bass or guitar using HB1's? If so, since the coils are stacked, is there any difference in volume between the upper and lower coils?

They will certainly work that way. Dave's is set up like that. Unfortunately so many 4002s lost their pickups over the years. I cannot even begin to guess why though. The 4002 has a special sound. It has the overall tone of a 4001 but has more fundamental, is easier to control and is smoother. Changing the pickups could only screw that up but so many have been altered anyway.

I have been talking to an old Forum member, who has come across yet another 4002, with its' pick ups' missing.

I have seen more 4002's w/o their pick ups than with the original ones.

You'd think that at $1300.00 apiece that they's remain unmodified. I guess it's like the '71 455 GSX Stage 1 that I saw with a 350 in it. Some people just can't leave well enough alone.

There will always be modders... for better or worse. When I had a show car and used to make the circuit I once saw a beautiful early-90's Porsche 911 turbo... again, sporting a 350.

Why, I said. Why?

Dave: Another one! The original pickups have a wonderful sound. I just don't get it.
