I read the serial # wrong - it starts wth 06 rather than 90.
That makes it around August 08, according to the registry!
Great stuff.

If it starts with 06, then it's '06.

Serial number: 06-33752

06=2006, 33=33rd week, 752 = unit #752

Looks like late July perhaps...? [at 4.3 weeks per month]

Been out of the loop awhile. Great posts! I don't think I have any pictures of just my 660's, but I can re-post my "fraternal" Ric twins pics.

What a cool thread...

I love 620's with a passion.. Got my first one in 1982 and never looked back

http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak- ... 54_358.jpg

A 1982 JG 620 and a 1980 FG 620/12 that belonged to Chris De Burgh before me...

Alas both of these guitars died in a fire in 1991... I did manage to find a replacement 1980 620/12... Still looking for an early 80's 620.

These days my main RIC is a 1991 JG 610.

Speaking of 660s and 620s, does anyone have an opinion on the difference between the two?

620: Neck Width at Nut = 41.4 mm (1.63'')
http://www.rickenbacker.com/model.asp?model=620/12

660: Neck Width at Nut = 44.5 mm 1.75'')
http://www.rickenbacker.com/model.asp?model=660/12

Personally, I've never picked up the wider necked 660, but I have a feeling it would have a nicer feel than the 620 which, like all other RIC 12-strings,
has a very narrow neck.

I thought the same thing Kent, but my new 660/12 AFG is proving to be difficult to come to terms with. The strings are just never where my fingers expect them to be. Certain chord changes always seem to have one finger "wrong", whereas if I play my 360/12 everything works beautifully. I think that I have gotten so used to the 360 that the 660 is just going to take some work.

The sound, build quality, and finish on the 660 are better than any RIC I have owned, but I just can't play the thing. It has only been a couple weeks so I hope come to terms with it.

It definitely seems to be a very personal choice/preference issue.

Thanks Brian. I agree about the tuners, I like them on a six string, but I wish RIC would have left the Klusons on the 12's. One song? Well, actually I really especially like it on 2- Beatles You Can't Do That and Anytime at All would have to be my main picks. It really has so much punch on those 2 tunes.
Much more so than my 360-12AFG.

The 660/12 Amber Fireglo does look nice. IMHO many of the FGs in recent past were way too orangy.

Todd: I'm in sort of the same boat, but the opposite way around. I've never gotten used to the thin-12 and as much as I love the look of my 620/12 I'm toying with the idea of finding someone who would want to trade. Thats not meant as a big hint-hint here as I think you should do what you suggest and give your 660 more time...... just as I should go find a 660 to try before I take such a drastic step.

Frank:

I agree with you whole heartedly. I have heard John Hall's response on the RIC corporate forum that the Kluson's were not the world greatest tuners, and they must have had difficulty over the years keep them in stock at the factory when they needed them. I note that the change to the Schallers came the year that John took over the company from his dad in 1986.

In fact I can agree with him in terms of the quality. My 1991 JG 610 with the Schallers never goes out of tune... But they just don't look right to me and they never will...

Since they use the re-creations on the vintage models anyway, I don't see why they don't just standardize so that all models use the same... Are the recreations that much more expensive then the Schallers? That would bring things back to 1983.

Anyway here's another picture of my 620/12 and a silly video I posted to you tube today! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFv9hqXdgyQ
