It looks like a miniature bass on Chris. They are great looking basses. I would love to play one. One day.........maybe I will get my wish. :D

Oh, I dunno... Looks about normal to me. 'Course, I probably have the same sort of "problem" with these little basses...

Yeah, I have to say, the CS is one painted bass I'd like to have too. One of these days, I hope to get to see one in person, and perhaps even play it...

When I saw it at T's place, he practically gave me the ol' Spinal Tap routine of, "Don't touch that guitar, nobody touches that guitar, I don't even touch that guitar!

Here's mine... it's 20 years old this year (cert #17). It's my second CS bass. The first was a 1999 (cert #800 something), bought that same year, which was pretty awful really. It didn't play well, had a huge neck and I didn't care for the colour (To me they are yellow... nothing white about it). I purchased online, so I couldn't look/play first. No big deal as I flipped it, losing nothing.
I knew that the earlier ones were substantially different, so I waited for the right player to come along of that vintage. In the autumn this bass came up for sale, from a seller in Japan. It had been on display in a Tokyo bar for nearly all its entire life... yes it's the "smokey" bass. Zero fretwear and no dings, BUTT (pun intended) the finish was destroyed by cigarette smoke. I thought there MIGHT be a chance I could salvage the finish, but was prepared for the worst. 30 seconds after opening the shipping carton I knew this would need to be refinished... the smell was BAD.
Over the past three months I have worked on the bass. Among the MANY things done I replaced the RIHS with a mount and shoes from 1963, and had Sergio work his magic on a replica bobbin complete with lip and correct screw tops (THANKS Sergio!!!!). The neck is incredibly thin, and she's the best 400x I've owned. That's out of 20+ Ricks I've had since 1969... my '68 MG being the bass I judge all other Ricks against. I can't say how impressed I am with this bass. I did a level/crown/polish, and cut a new Tusq nut yesterday and the action is just sick...

I plan on starting a thread on the transformation, similar to the one I did years ago with my white V63... I took MANY photos throughout the various stages. Stay tuned...

Anyway, I'll shutup now, and let the pictures rip...
Cheers
Sean

Wow, pretty wood hiding underneath all that nicotine and tar!

The early CS and v63 basses are da bomb. I had a '93 v63 that, despite having issues, was still a wrecking machine. Just ask Joey - he has it now!

Hi John

Yep, I was surprised at the maple under there. It's got quite a bit of flame, though the pics don't really show it that well.

Hey Sean, can you link to the article on the White bass? I'd like to see more about it. I can look at the finished bass anytime (it's in the Forest), but I'd like to see the transition. Thanks! :)

When I read RIC was making a CS bass, in 1990(?) I wanted one bad, just wasn't sure if they'd offer it left-handed. They did, got mine from Southpaw Guitars in 1991(?) for $999.

Sure thing Paul!

I just took a peek at the thread... I'd forgotten how many pics there are. That certainly is a handsome instrument. A shame I had to sell her, but that was a very trying time for me. Are you enjoying her Paul?
Cheers
Sean
