I voted Sir Paul...however, my real reason for buying my 4001 isn't on that list and I really wasn't influenced by any celebrity bassist. I loved the voice-like snarling sound of a 4001- definitely went so well with the aesthetics of the bass. All other basses to me always seemed muddy without much personality. The 4001 had a tone that seemed to match its rakish body style and cresting headstock and just its general fantastic looks and proportions. It's not a lumpy, muddy, middle-of-the-bell-curve bass- either in tone or in style. "Generic" it's not!

I'm really disappointed that Bruce Foxton's not on that main list, as he has influenced many bass players in the UK to pick up a bass, myself included, as well as my mate Stan Stammers from Spear Of Destiny and Theatre of Hate. Incidentally Stan used a Mapleglo 4001 on every Theatre of Hate song recorded, and his sound is unique and amazing, the main force behind all the ToH songs, not the guitar as in most bands.
My vote would be Bruce Foxton, Stan Stammers, Horace Panter, Paul Simonon and John Entwistle, as they have all influenced me. But it was jointly Bruce and Stan that got me to play bass.

I just picked a bunch of names I knew. I wish I could put more up but I can't.
There are a number of people who no one realizes ever played a Ric... also a number of people who pick up a Ric before knowing of a celeb who plays one.

Like some here have stated previously.......I was drawn to the tone/sound of a Rickenbacker bass BEFORE I even knew what it was.
Chris Squire.....playing "Roundabout". I remember being knocked out by that bass. I had NEVER heard any bass sound like that one.
That was WELL over 30 years ago. Chris Squire, to this day, is my BIGGEST influence as a bassist. And the Rickenbacker 4001 is my FAVORITE bass of all time---I own 2 of them.
I have seen YES a zillion times, and have met/talked with Chris on two seperate occasions.....VERY cool guy!!!!!
Rickenbackers Rule!!!!

Roundabout is also my favorite Yes song, and thanks to that song (and Chris playing a Rick) that I started listening to the band... my uncle had mentioned it to me years ago, but never really payed much atention to him (my bad, he also mentioned the who and I again did not hear till years later). Then one day, watching tv at a friend's home, and zapping, I see this guy playing a Rick like crazy and had to stop. Roundabout live. That was it. By that time I was a Rick fan already, so everytime I saw someone playing a Rick, I invariably gave the band a chance.
Cheers!

In any case Paul d'Amour was my link up to Rics... his tone on Undertow is THE reason why I began to consider the brand.
+1 but you already knew that cass---
His tone on the 4001cs he plays on Undertow is just devastatingly mean. Its just angry
Then I actually
saw what a Rickenbacker looked like--And that did it for me.

Mines are also a little different I think

:
First and mainly I was influenced by Nicky Wire from Manic Street Preachers

.
After that "mani" from "Primal Scream"
Then some new bands' bass players (I even do not know their names) like "Cazals" "The Rakes" and "Franz Ferdinand" ...
BTW thanks to internet, I saw many non-celebrity bassist who were really good rick players

.

i never confirmed this, and he was not exactly a household name, but rick price of the move had a *killer* bass tone on their records that i think was probably a 4001. also the chap on sparks' "kimono my house"....but the sound from the bass on "every little thing" from yes started it all.....for me.

Going in for the makeout a la Brittany and Madonna?
Just kidding... there are similar shots of me and my former bandmate who played lead. And even worse, they're on Facebook.

I'm totally with you man! Cliff gave Metallica and metal a completely different approach... Can't get enough from the Call of Ktulu.. man.. those bass lines are insanely obscure!
Great loss indeed...
RIP Cliff!
Somebody mentioned on the other forum that apart from the gibson and the jazz bass pups he also had a strat pup hid where the mute foam should be... interesting
I want BG to be a stardard color again!!!
Cheers
