also, to bookmatch any piece of wood, they are splitting possibly a 1-1.5 "slab into 2 pieces and after planing and sanding, you're left with 3/8 " of finished wood to cap with. to make solid wings in book match, that's a hefty piece of thick wood...on the order of 3-5 " of raw stock and very expensive. maybe the rick's wood pieces chosen have so much flame and so consistent, they do not need to book match...just cut out pieces from a 1.5" board and visually choose the pieces that look closely matching.

Ron, Michael's MVP series of basses are solid, this is something I always liked about the MVP basses; his other series of basses are capped.

Yep, My Pedulla Buzz (MVP series fretless) is solid with flamed wings with similar grain, but not book-matched. I think they may generally just split one big hunk down the middle to make the wings and stick them on either side of the neck piece (though the grain of the upper edge of the lower wing on mine doesn't seem to be an exact match, or line up perfectly with the grain of the lower edge of the upper wing).

well, jeff. there's always exceptions, but the link you posted were laminate basses. i don't know of every series from every manufacturer but that was my observation. when you bookmatch thinner pieces, you get more instruments covered. yes it's nice to have solid basses, but in most cases with exotic woods, there will be more laminate bodies than solid, thus the upper crust ibanez, pedulla, alembic, blah, blah.

That was just the welcome page to his site, I suppose I could have gone to the specific area, but I figured most bassists are familiar with Pedulla, as they seem to be pretty high profile for a boutique maker.
