I absolutely LOVE it. i need to take it in for a little set up and such, but it's in inredible shape. when i got my other one last year, i noticed and odor in the case. thought maybe it was around a cat eons ago or something, but this case sort of smells like that too. sort of a sour smell.

is this common?

My 75 case has an odor like that...not sure I would call it "cat", but it is a little pungent. I suppose it could be some urea outgassing from the foam. Some old plastics and foam can do that.

I'm not sure there's anything to worry about.

I didn't figure as much. I've thought about using Fabreeze or something like that, but just haven't done it. It's no sweat, was just wondering.

And DAMN do I love this thing. Normally I'm not a fan of black instruments, but this one does it for me.

Sean...the only Ric that I ever bought just to sell had a case smell like that. The only one that I have come across. That was JG as well! It stank, I put it down to the chaps house....but maybe not!

Sean, you can use Febreeze in a case, just don't wet the plush lining too much or it might get too matted down and stiff. You'll want to be certain the inside is completely dry before putting your Rick back in the case. It's best to do it on a nice dry day so you can leave the case to dry outside.

smells like a cat or...P____?!

Was this a new instrument? If so, all of Rics that I've bought new have smelled, but they smelled GOOD! But I have to admit, I bought a Fender once, that came with a molded case, and it would smell bad after sitting in that case for a day or two... It got so bad that I avoided letting it sit in the case anymore than necessary. But the Ric-o-smell when I got my v63 was like a spring garden or something....

it's a 1980. i think it's just the old foam aging as both cases have the similar smell.

Cats LOVE guitar cases. I don't know why but they do. The quickest way to find my cats is to open a case and they find me. The problem is that non-neutered male cats will pee in them before you can figure out what they are doing . I can't explain it. It just happens.

They also love sitting on carpeted speaker cabinets. My PA speakers used to be covered with cat fur, and I had to clean them before each show. Maybe it's that "Sitting on a Mountain" thing? Finding a high point and perching up there?

In the past I have used those perfume/cologne sample cards that come in some magazines.. leave one in the case after airing it out.. Though I was trying to cover up smoke/sweat smell. But as I think about this, I wonder if a small cloth bag of activated charcoal (from pet shops) would absorb the odor you are talking about.

Mine love doing that Steve. The problem is that they assume my speaker cabs are just giant scratchposts, so I have had to seperate cats & speakers.....
