650 Question

Hello, I've got Ric-itis, having purchased my first Ric, a mapleglo 330 6-string in November, and a 360-12VP in fireglo last month. I'm a drummer who writes songs, and records his own music. At 38, and having been a tight-wad my whole life, I realized that I have been playing the same awesome drum set for 13 years, and that it is not practical to own many drum sets, and, well, I play rhythm guitar, write some jangly songs, you know, it all clicked, I saw Edge playing his 330-12 fireglo and Ric-itis took over.

Given that, I have been interested in getting a humbucking type of guitar with a fast neck, something to rock a little bit harder, and I started learning about the 650 models. Can anyone comment on the sound and feel of the 650's, compared to the more traditional Ric's? I would want it to rock significantly harder than a 330 in order to complement my guitar ensemble. Also, I am interested in the difference between the 650C and 650D in terms of sound and the way the finish on the neck is. I have read that the 650D has a super smooth finish on the neck, but reviews on the 650C are rather sparse. Admittedly, I am swayed toward the 650C, since I like the black, and my 330 is already a natural finish.

Thanks, it's great to be one you lunatics !!

You picked us as lunatics this early in the piece?? Very perceptive, Steve.

Can't help you with any info on the 650 series but I'll take this opportunity to welcome you to 'The Club'.

I'll add 'Ric-itis' to my list of Rickenbacker addiction synonyms!

Welcome, Steve - you'll find this a much more relaxed and informative place than alt.guitar.rickenbacker Image

Boy, ain't that the truth! Welcome, Steve, to a very vital and active cornerstone of the Rickenbacker cvommunity.

Spend some time reading the various threads. There has been much said on the sound and playability of the 650s.

Steve, go here:

On the song 'Sand -intro' you can hear a Ric 650. You can hear a 1997 too -and a 360V64. However, the 650's role in the song is over-the-top and clearly audible.

Cheers, Noel

Steverok, I've been wondering the same thing myself, since I don't have a humbucking guitar either. I've been sorely tempted to experience a 650, which I like even more due to the recent decision to offer them in all the standard finishes. I'm wondering how the necks feel as well as info about neck width, etc. I've played quite a few Les Pauls lately, but the necks seem awfully thick to me, I'm more used to the 350v63 I have, and an old Strat with a "C" neck. I could also buy about four 650s for the price of one Les Paul, and that is a factor as well...
Thanks!
