What's up with this one?
It's actually not a bad starting bid for this, and no reserve.
Looks like it needs original knobs, not sure if that's a toaster pickup or not.

Also, the pickguard is neither original to the bass nor Rickenbacker-made. The neck pickup is indeed a 'toaster'.

I am really surprised that GC doesn't have a MUCH HIGHER starting bid! Image

Is anyone considering it? I have the green light to get it, but I don't want to pay too much and I would want to replace teh pickguard and control knobs.

Boy, Instrument Exchange really fumbled this one, normally a bass like this would be offered at a starting price of $7000.00!!!
It does look nice, and it appears to be it has the orig metal pu cover...

Should this bass have a split bridge? I'm no expert but I don't think I've ever seen a '73 with a split bridge.

I'm looking for one like this, without the problems, in FG.

Yes, it is a split tailpiece.

Dan,
A split tailpiece is normal for a Jan.~June '73 4001. What intrigues me about this Feb. one is it's a combination of both pre and post mid '73 features---the 1" toaster position is a post-mid '73 feature while the full width MOP inlays and split tailpiece are "pre" features. This one is truely a "transistional" piece. By the way, the Guitar Center guy lists its spec as "set neck" and "pickups-unknown", really a joke!

I hope one of our members scores this one!

Here's another Feb. '73 with exactly the same features including non-original pickguards, sold in May 2004.

So the majority opinion seems to be that this bass is pretty accurate except for the pickguard and knobs? What's a ballpark value figure for this? As you can tell, I'm looking to pull the trigger if I can get a thumbs-up from this distinguished group.

Starting price of 7K, Gene?

Crikey, my 72' Burgundy went for $2047.

So...could it be possible that the aftermarket pickguard just had the pickup hole in the wrong location? Or would the body have had to be routed for the pickup to be in its current position. It doesn't look quite like 1" spacing to me, it looks somewhere between 1/2" and 1."

Hey Paul! You dug up MY Feb.'73 JG that I got off of the 'bay!!
Image
I took the chrome 1" p/g off, sold it locally, and bought the proper 1/2" p/g from Marc S.
It has MAJOR buckle rash on the back, but other than that , it is a fine instrument with all the early '73 goodies.....

This newer one's serial # is only about 150 from mine!!

....there WAS some routing, of course, to accept the 1" p/u spacing....but the new p/g fit very nicely with the 1/2" spacing....It looks just like it should...

Ha, Chris! I remembered one of us forumites scored it but didn't really know who did. Thanks for coming forward! Image Is the bass still with you?

Since yours was routed to accommodate the 1" spaced chrome guard, I can't help but wonder if that one on eBay had the same fate?
