It looks great from the photos save for the P-Bass pickup modification that was once done to it.

I noticed later that the tuners are Hipshots, although the listing states that the originals are included.

I'm looking for one of these in FG but not with all the mods. Still pretty nice. $1800 is a stretch -- but he might get it.

But $1799.00???? Well.....a bit steep, I believe...
Maybe $1500, $1600 tops....

This was one that he bought off ebay for less..I remember seeing it because of the tuners and the pickup cover being screwed down ON TOP of the chrome surround.

Lovely though; if I had the money....I'd love a 72-ish j/glo wth FWMOP etc...

"I noticed later that the tuners are Hipshots"
No, those are Schaller M4S tuners. I used to have a set on my 4005WB that I replaced with Hipshot Ultralites. It made a very nice improvement all around.

Did you have to do any modifications to accept the Schaller tuners? This bass comes with the original tuners and if I can easily retrofit the old ones back on without any headaches and there are no hidden issues, I may go for it.

I believe they require a larger hole for the post......and it certainly looks like it in the pics.

Well that would certainly kill that purchase.

For the money it killed it for me (along with my fear of what may be going on under the pickguard) BUT it isn't a total mess. The holes could be plugged/redrilled and the headstock refinished.

I thought about that option if the rest of the bass is okay.

Look at the back of the headstock, It appears to have been refinished. There is a line approx even with the nut. Hopefully just resprayed from the tuner mod, but possibly a repaired break.

I wouldn't let the larger tuner holes deter you from getting this bass if everything else works for you (price, notwithstanding). The 11/16" Ultralite tuners will fit just fine and they are really excellent tuners. You can get the Hipshot tuners with their modern looking Y key or vintage cloverleaf keys to keep the vintage look. I personally prefer the Y key as, to me, a Rickenbacker bass is a very modern looking instrument and the Y key just adds to that impression, even on my 4005WB.
