I usually don't really check the basses but this one is real nice.

I would get it but I have 2 4004 basses now ...

If I could get it, I'd turn it into the experimental 4001 shown in the Smith rickenbacker book. Add the 4001 style bridge... and the 4005 style pickguard...4 knobs...

I could always buy it and do the black with flames paint job I've been dreaming about .

I put a 4003 high gain bridge pickup in my 4004L ... I had to replace the 500k pots with 250k pots ... otherwise it was too harsh ... I might try a 250k volume pots and 500k tone pot like the 4001/4003 use ... or I might put in all 300k pots ...

With single coil pickups the 4004 resonates a little like the 60's 4001 basses because of the all maple construction and the lower body weight ...

in other words they are good experimental basses ... and they make good 5 string basses ... the nut is the same size as a Carvin 5 string nut and the bridge size is the same as some epiphone and Dillion basses ... and the stock 4004 pickups have a nice growl ...

One man's trash is another's treasure. I like my 4004 L the way it is...

Then again, I'm fairly hesitant to do ANY mods to a Rick...although I might be tempted to put brighter sounding PU's in my 650 Dakota. But since I'm playing bass now that's not really even on the radar.

I'd mod a Ric provided a new replacement was still in production.

Ed - Your Laredo is amongst the Cheyenne II ranks in my opinion - just as beautiful, just minus the Walnut. Maple quilt + FG is amazing!

Something like that MidB 4004L shows you that the 4004 is the 21st century equivalent of a workhorse, no-frills, great-sounding bass from Ric - just like the 4001S was, 40 years ago.

I cant figure this auction at all. Very nice looking bass. If I didnt have the GAS for a Jetglo Larado, it would've been mine long ago.

Midnight Blue is my favorite Ric finish. This is a beautiful bass. But... I prefer the 4003. Nice bass, though! Somebody ought to grab it.

The thing that's odd is the this bass, and a similar one from a vintage shop in NJ, is that there have been no bids at all...the NJ is a 2nd listing I think.

There was another very similar bass from Kentucky a month or so ago...that one was snagged by someone who posts here I think, with a last minute bid.

And over Christmas there was "The Tale of Two Basses"...I beleve Jeff Rath picked up a beautiful Cheyenne I for about the same price (IIRC) as frankenstiened alleged 73 4001. Remeer that one? Some mongrel neck OU and enough switches to resemble the cockpit of the space shuttle?

So as much as we on this board are thinking these basses are gaining in popularity, it seems they are still next to unknown to the casual musician.

could it be that the reason it isn't selling is, you can get a new one (and shipping) for less than the BIN?

Heck I got a new one, with shipping (and insurance on the shipping) for $120 less...I suppose that the seller is hoping that the "wait" factors into it.

But if there is no reserve (no way of knowing) one could get this bass for a lot cheaperthan a new one...

Curious.
