I see a lot of them on the older rics. were they ever stock or was it just a thing of the times to change them over to the Grovers?

The "wavy" Grovers were on 4001 basses from '71 to the early '80s although the Kluson ones were widely used during the mid-'70s~early '80s period.

Some early '80s 4003 basses came with the wavy Grovers too.

Schaller tuners took over entirely in about '82~84, IIRC.

And there was an earlier version as well, of the same tuner, that had Flat[non wavy] buttons on them.

i must say that i prefer the 'normal' rick tuners, but that's prolly only because it's what i am used to.

I have them on my 72 fretless also, and had them on a 75 4001, both were stock, I like the looks of them.

When I bought my 75 4001 I thought they were replacements and complained to the salesman, haha!

I like the look of Hipshot Ultralites with their Y key on RICs, but you guys already know that! Image

Yes, it's an established given, Jeff.

Here are the 1st-generation non-wavy Grovers Don mentioned, used in '70 and '71 and probably as early as '69.

That pretty much winds things up Paul.

Ah, the history of RIC tuners is a long and winding road that leads me to your door, Peter.
