There is a very interesting and rare
1970 Model 4005 bass photo recently posted on the Rickenbacker Registration Page. This is a beauty and the bound f-hole is really striking. There cannot be many of these out there.

Could this be the elusive 3261?

Gerard: This may indeed be the link to the "Elusive 3261". Time to bring in the Rickenbacker anthropologists. There is digging to do.

Yes, it is stunning. I had wondered if the export 4005 was different from the domestic version.
First known pic too Peter, quite a coup.
Anyone like to hazard a guess as to how many made?
25 or less?

In about October or November 1998, British dealer Music Ground had a 1967 Fireglo F-hole 4005 in from Italy, priced at £2900 (approximately $4200 today). This bass was probably a genuine Rose Morris 3261 and had a rounded top and a mono input only. The reason that I passed up on the bass was that the 1 o'clock F-hole was exactly the same size as on the Rose-Morris 1993-1998 guitars and looked totally out of place on the larger body. The overall effect really didn't look right at all and I continued in my search for a more aesthetically-pleasing scimitar-shaped-hole example. However, the 1970 Jetglo bass on the registration page has a longer, better-proportioned F-hole than the 1967 one that definitely does look right ! Unfortunately, I have no photos of this earlier bass. Roll on the Rickenbacker custom shop. My order for a three-pickup 4005/8RM awaits !
