Need help shipping a bass to the U.K.

Has anyone here shipped a bass to the U.K. from the east coast lately? If you don't mind, could you tell me how much it cost you? I'm no good at international shipping. Every time I do it I end up losing big on the deal. The last one I did I ended up losing over $100.00 in shipping cost to ship one to Belgium. The UPS website calculator told me it would be $350.00 but when I got to UPS it was almost $500.00!!!! As far as I can tell I'm doing all the measurements/weighing right. I don't want to be one of those people who don't sell outside the states.

I just shipped a C64 to Italy from Pa. USPS Airmail for $93.15. It took a little over 2 weeks to get there, but the shipping charge was cheap. I also shipped a 4003 to the UK back in Dec. via UPS and I think it was about $250.

I shipped a bass to Greece a couple of months ago. USPS air parcel post was by far the cheapest method -- about $93. A bass in the box was just under the maximum allowable dimensions. Check the USPS web site to see the limits for U.K. as they differ from country to country.

Thanks guys, that helps me out. I think the delievery time is what messed me up last time. Trying to avoid a negitive on Ebay I always try to ship pretty fast.

Yes Jim, that was the same one. I became very frustrated with it. Out of all the Rics I have own this was the worse to get properly setup the way I like. I couldn't get it intonated and setup with really low action for the life of me. She was a beauty thow, and I wish it would have worked out.
J.C., Richard is right about the restrictions.
I had my C64 double-boxed and I had to remove the outer box in order to ship it. I don't think the UK has the same restrictions.

Not quite yet, I'm waiting to try a Fender 300w tube amp. Long story, but once I do, I'll be able to go after the Traynor.

Just to remind you guys that I had a '91 V63 Reissue sent to me in the UK via USPS; it never arrived and it took me a year to get the insurance through. Tread carefully.

Yeah Mark, I wasn't best pleased...(you'll believe a man can cry...). Beauty of a bass too; some wear, but lovely. $999. What made it even worse was I lost about £200 via the change in exchange rate...
Fair enough re the Alembic/Rick thing. You've got to do what feels right and what makes you happy (and hope you don't get arrested for it!!

Shaun that really sucks. Did USPS ever find the bass?
J.C. I was sweating it with my C64 taking so long to be delivered. I just found out early today that it arrived safe and sound.
USPS is cheap, the downside it delivery time.
UPS a little expensive but I think it only took 5 or 7 days to the UK.

Took 4 days for my last recieval from the USA - that was the Cii, with UPS.
Outgoing, took 5 days - that was my 72' to South Pasadena, Ca from England, again with UPS.
